hard to say base off your description as there are too many variables. ie. happens on wifi or cellular data, does everyone have MMS turned on....

If you message a group and one person that is in the group replies to you via the one-on-one thread, on their device, you will get the outcome you describe. Vise versa as well. If you message someone one-on-one and they reply via a group message that you are part of you will have this result as well.
