Q: Handbrake App. from Teacher Tube--is it safe to open?

I just signed up for "Teacher Tube". I am a new teacher and this would give me the ability to have my own website, where I can post my own video content, and allow my students to blog, and the parents can communicate with me. I have Google Classroom through work, and I have a PC that I could put that whole thing (Teacher Tube) on. Teacher Tube has an app. called "Handbrake". They say they cannot play or embed several different types of multimedia without this "Handbrake". What are your thoughts? Should I just use the school issued PC to use that app? (Therefore not exposing my MAC to any type of situation such as this. The owner of the site says he was a principal years ago and wanted to start this site for teachers to be able to put their own video content on the site. I am familiar with the concept of "Unsigned Applications"by unknown developers

, and that the best case scenario is always using the apple store, or iTunes only. If this guy were so fastidious about this being an educational site, his idea of a "gift to teachers", and he has 1.5 million users, why can't he get his app signed? Does it have something to do with Open Source or Creative Commons? I find this somewhat unsettling, and just because he says its okay, doesn't mean I will run off and download that app. However, if he is right, I will miss out on a lot of content, and not be able to embed Flikr, and several others. Also, he says we can only buy it safely on his site. Every other copy would be suspect. What should I do?

Thank You

If this is the Handbrake your talking about, you might as well get it directly from here: https://handbrake.fr

What I don't understand, are the references to embedding... Handbrake essentially is a video transcoder. It converts video from one type to another, nothing else. You'll probably need it to upload video in the correct format.

BTW: I don't see any risks in downloading Handbrake. It has a good reputation.

I've been using it for years with video converting, I've never run into an issue after installing it that my machine was doing something other than what the developer claimed the program was for. Personally I'm really happy with it and it's more flexible than other applications that are not free or that come bundled with an OS.
