Q: the little virtual button that turns wifi on won't switch to on

on my iPhone 4 the virtual switch in settings > wifi (which is off) won't switch to on when i touch it, tap it, swipe it or anything else I can think of to do.  The touch screen responds normally otherwise.

    Hello DVeneski,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that you are unable to turn on Wi-Fi on your iPhone 4. I certainly understand the need for Wi-Fi. I use it a lot myself. In a situation like this I recommend these steps:

If Wi-Fi is grayed out or dim on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Check if the issue still exists after each step:

    1. Make sure you have the latest version of iOS
    2. Tap Settings General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset all network settings, including Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.

    Best Regards

Okay that worked, now it won't connect.  The little grey wheel just goes round and round.  When I try to type in a network name I get a message that says "Could not scan for wireless networks.  I have tried with a name that requires a password, and one that doesn't - same message.

    Hello DVeneski,

Thanks for your quick reply! If you are still having issues connecting, you may want to have the hardware tested to make sure there isn't an issue with the Wi-Fi antenna. A hardware test can be run with Apple phone support, chat support or at one of the Apple Retail Stores. You will need to check to see which service options are available for your country here: https://getsupport.apple.com/

    Cheers
