Q: How can I transfer music from my iPod classic back to iTunes

I have compiled a large number of carefully laid out playlists on iTunes and synched to several devices. I've bought newer devices with more memory so I can store all my music on an iPod touch I use in the car and an iPad that I have at work so I don't have to constantly re-synch to get playlists I'm in the mood for. These are long playlists painstakingly put together to follow the musical development of specific artists or music genre. Awhile back, iTunes started duplicating playlists after synching and  I simply deleted the duplicates. Now, it has completely deleted some very large playlists which will take a long time to pull back together (it appears that I can find most of the music still somewhere in iTunes so I think I can reconstruct these). It has also been challenging to synch newer devices. It appears that things just get transferred at random and some things don't synch at all. What's up with iTunes anyway? It used to be so simple to synch these devices!

These playlists are composed from music ripped from CD's as well as digital music purchased from iTunes and Amazon (all legally purchased music). It appears that my iPod classic still has all the music on it with the major playlists intact. There are some duplicate tracks within some of the playlists that I could clean up with much less effort than it would take to fix the current listings in my iTunes. Is there a way that I can transfer the music from my iPod classic with the playlists mostly intact to iTunes so that I can clean them up and synch this with my other devices (iPad, iPod touch, iPod nano)? I am hesitant to do any synching or purchasing of new music until I can get this worked out. My iPod classic works for now, but it is several years old and  I don't want to risk it burning out and losing all the organized files. I'm also hoping that hooking the iPod classic up to iTunes doesn't screw up what is already on the classic.

My iTunes is on an external drive that I connect to a PC that was recently updated with Windows 10. (The problem with iTunes happened before the Windows 10 upgrade).
