Q: $358 vs $1,200 RAM ??? Worth it ?

Hi Guys

So I JUST received my ordered CTO MacPro 6-core 1TB SSD D700GPU with 64GB of RAM.

but........

when my sales person delivered my long awaited expensive MacPro it was delivered with all the specs as specifed BUT the RAM, the RAM was 16GB std as it comes out, and my 64GB of RAM was delivered at the same time in a form of a separate package, 4x 16GB Crucial RAM sticks.

So I see it as the salesperson took a bit of extra profit on the sale, since the cost of the Crutial RAM is not the $1,200 that Apple charge extra for a CTO with 64GB of RAM but instead $358 @ B&H

Now I ended up getting 16GB plus 64GB of RAM where Apple would have not given me the 16GB std in the machine but take it out (or never would have put it in) and give me 64GB for $1,200 extra, but I now ended up getting 80GB of RAM (I know I can only use the 16GB or the 64GB at a time in my MacPro) for $358.

I feel I was scammed, but now I LOVE to know what the diference is between the orginal Apple RAM and the Crucial RAM?

My take on this is: THERE MUST BE A DIFFERENCE, just like everything in life - you get what you pay for. $358 vs $1,200 is HUGE

My sales person assured me that the difference is NON and you will be more happy with the Crucial.....

I beg to differ, can some one shed some light on this huge price difference?

I am not following this whole thing but Crucial is one of the few brands I see recommended on these forums for Macs.

I hear you, but is the price difference for Apple's 64GB RAM of $1,200 vs the Crucial's 64GB of $358 worth the $842 price??

Sure there must be a reason why Apple charges that price for 64GB vs Crucial.

Crucial RAM is excellent, easily on a par with whatever Apple are currently using.

And it is very poor form to accuse someone of cheating without some proof. You have given this poor unnamed individual no chance to answer your accusation.

I have never purchased a computer new so I can't comment on the purchase.  I am even wondering if this was purchased from Apple itself, or a third party.  It does not strike me as very Apple-ish to hand you a computer and a bag of RAM sticks.  If you did get this from Apple and are unhappy with the purchase you can return the item within 14 days for a full refund.  If things really are as you describe, return it, then buy the base computer with minimum RAM and order more RAM yourself from a dealer you prefer (such as Crucial direct). Keep the old RAM to install should you have another issue with the computer during the warranty period.

OK thanks, so why would anyone then pay $842 more for Apple RAM to go to 64GB from 16GB if Crucial was so good? Then Apple could just sell the MacPro with NO RAM and tell you to buy your own??

Not from Apple direct, but instead a authorised Apple retailer as Apple is not South Africa.

Then the scam (if such it was) was by their staff, take it back, get a refund and buy from someone else.

Nope, would never pay that kind of price for RAM.

Also it sounds like you were cheated. Apple would never fulfill an order for a CTO build of a Mac, by sending you RAM you have to install yourself.

So yes, it sounds like the retailer placed an order for a standard build Mac Pro, and then sold you third party RAM at Apple prices.

I would not allow the sale to go through, and would buy elsewhere.

I wouldn't, but you did, so why are you asking me why.

Yes, it does sound like some cheating is going on here, and who wants to rely for support from one who started the relationship by cheating

I did not know that is what the sale was going to be.

I PAID a 70% deposit on this (as per my invoice) and only got the RAM with delivery of the MacPro.

I have not paid the outstanding and I am not going to do so either.

Are you going to rely on them for support knowing that they started by cheating you?

Funny that you ask that. In South Africa SUPPORT is non exciting (in all business) and it's everyone for themselves in any case, so should something go wrong you (being me) are on your/my own in any case.

Take it back and don't deal with them again, you already know that they will cheat you from the first dealings, are you going to let them continue cheating you?
