Q: Corrupted iPod Classic 5.5G

Hello everyone!

I am quite ashamed to make my first step here by asking for help, but We all had to start somewhere

So...I've experienced quite weird problem today, and here's what is bothering me:

I am Windows user to start with, and today I went through the proces of updating my Windows to one of Insider Preview images.

Everything went flawlessly (blah blah), but now, once I plug in my iPod (80gb) and launch iTunes, I am being welcomed by two saddening notifications:

First one is directly from Windws, insisting on me to format before using this disc.

Of course I refuse (It contains very large collection of music, and last backup is from a month ago or so [I would be lacking some songs If i restored from that point - so no]) and proceed to iTunes to see what's going on.

There we go. It blocks me from accessing my songs on my laptop (Lenovo y50), even though after i disconnect iPod, I can freely listen to the songs directly from it.

Of course it comes to mind that the culprit of all this mess might be the unstable build of Windows (although everything works fine, just like before updating it...), but is there any way to fix this issue, other than:

1. restoring it to default/formatting

2. downgrading windows to earlier version and hoping it fixes itself?

If You need more info/details, I'm gonna fill it up asap

Any kind of help is really appreciated!

With regards,

Cris aka Zathura

Check the device's HDD stats with Corrupt iPod Classic.

I've seen a couple of threads that suggest this may be a false alarm generated in recent builds of Windows 10. If the iPod is set up for disk use try disabling that to see if that helps.

Thank You for a such quick response!

I've done as in linked tutorial* with results below:

    Retracts: 122

    Reallocs: 0

    Pending Sectors: 0

    PowerOn Hours: 2287

    Start/Stops: 11385

Also I'm not sure where to disable disk use of my iPod (yes I've set it to disk use long before that, but now I am completely clueless how to perform that (cant access any options about iPod from iTunes)

*I've done only first method and im about to perform "Check iPod hard-drive for errors".

Sorry to edit, i'll edit once more.

Edit2: I cannot complete that because after pressing "check now" it asks about formatting the disc.

The HDD stats look fine. When you look at the device's Summary tab in iTunes one of the options is Enable disk use. Make sure that is turned off. That may stop Windows from trying to check the device's drive. That said it seems this might be a more fundamental problem between recent builds of Windows 10 and FAT formatted drives.

See what happens if you boot up the computer with the iPod already connected. It is just possible that Windows won't be reporting a problem with it when you start iTunes.

Nothing new, Windows is too smart for such tricks

Well, I assume it is just a temporary problem and Windows will provide patch with a fix soon. I've already posted about my problem in the Insider feedback section.

Thank You once again for help!

Microsoft noticed my (and some people's) constant moaning and implemented a fix for the issue:

    Improvements and fixes for PC
    [...]
You should now be able to mount iPods as USB mass-storage devices.

    https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/07/18/build14393/

Installing the build right now, but I suppose it's my last visit in this topic (sadly in some way).

    Cheers!
