Jul 19, 2016 8:15 PM in response to ginadetby MoonJ.,★HelpfulHi ginadet,
I understand that you have some concerns about roaming charges you've received while this functionality was turned off. I know it's important to have control over your service, so I'm happy to provide some direction for this.
The first thing I'd recommend is ensuring that the iOS on your iPhone is up to date to ensure the best compatibility. You can see how to do that here:
Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
You can also read more about roaming here:
Use cellular networks on your iPhone and iPad while you travel internationally - Apple Support
About cellular data settings and usage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support
This should clarify things, cheers!

Jul 19, 2016 10:22 AM in response to ginadetby ChrisJ4203,The Roaming setting that you see in Settings>Cellular is for Data. It says that on the setting itself. That should prevent data roaming, but not roaming for your phone calls and/or SMS. Unless your Verizon phone differs from my AT&T, there is no setting I am aware of for call roaming. You would have to put the device into Airplane Mode. Is it data that you were charged for, or call roaming?

Jul 19, 2016 2:23 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by ginadet,It was for data roaming. Which is why I'm wondering if there is glitch, because data was turned off the entire time and I was still getting a signal.

Jul 19, 2016 8:15 PM in response to ginadetby ChrisJ4203,★HelpfulEven though data is turned off, you would still see a signal if one is available. How much data was used? If you go to Settings>Cellular and look at the apps, including System Services at the bottom of the list, you should be able to see what was used, depending on when the last time you reset that list.

Jul 19, 2016 8:15 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by ginadet,I didn't know there would be still be a signal if roaming was turned off. None of our other phones (there were 5 of us traveling together) had one. Thanks for the info.

Jul 19, 2016 9:07 PM in response to ginadetby ChrisJ4203,I'm sorry, I stand corrected on that. I just double-checked my device and after turning cellular off, (I can't check roaming from home), it removes the data symbol. I wonder if it is possible there was a stray Verizon signal. Have you tested turning cellular data off again, without having wi-fi turned on to see if you see a signal? Had you contacted Verizon before your trip to see about cellular roaming for voice? Is it possible they made a mistake in provisioning? Did you have cellular data turned off, or just have roaming turned off? There are two separate settings.
