Q: El Capitan will not restart or shut down.

El Capitan will not restart or shut down after I installed it on my MacBook Pro.  It simply hangs up and does nothing and I have to manually shut down by holding the power button down.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

    'Tried'? Did you do this:

    http://www.wacom.com/en-us/support/faqs/drivers-software/how-do-i-uninstall-a-dr iver-on-mac-os-x

Afterwards check for Wacom/Bamboo-related items in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login, and remove these too.

No, I used App Delete followed by a manual search in Library which located a few related items. After doing that, I tried a restart which failed as usual. I then did a forced shut down and restarted. That was when I made the post - should have waited. I had another reminder that an update was available - 10.11.6 - so I clicked on restart and it did! As well as installing 10.11.6 (I was previously on beta so it looks as though I need to go to Sierra) it also installed iTunes again (five times in all now) but I no longer have any outstanding updates.

Thanks for the Users & Groups reminder - that has now gone as well.

    TY

Caffeine was the problem app for me. I shut it down, removed it from Login Items and now my machine (Early 2015 MBA) will restart/log out with no issue.

I've had this issue since my 10.9 install on my MacBook Pro.  Sometimes, creating a fresh user account would temporarily address the issue.

I discovered that I also run the Digidesign CoreAudio driver for my old Mbox 2 Mini.  I removed the "Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin" file and things seem to work for now.

I'll need to do some more digging to figure out whether I can continue to run that driver and/or use my old hardware given it's not supported by Avid anymore.

Thanks for posting the info.  Huge help!

    Hi Ken

As previously stated somewhere in the post, delete everything Wacom and try restarting. In other words, do not reinstall Wacom. You are just repeating the same problem.

    Cheers

    TY

Thanks for providing this info. But can somebody tell me how to solve this problem since Avid Core Audio plugin is important for other audio software(i.e. Logic ProX) to use Avid's interface. It cannot be removed. Otherwise, the sound of other audio software won't come out from Avid's audio interface to main speakers. Does anyone have solutions?

I've had this same issue (without any trouble from audio plugins). I reset my PRAM and the restart/shutdown is now working properly. Hard shut down (holding the power key until your computer turns off.) Turn on your computer and hold down the CMD+Option+P+R keys at the same time. Release keys after the second startup tone. Login normally.

Free Sophos Antivirus version 9 was the cause of the same problem here on Mac Mini 2010.

Check the console well! it gives you hints where the shutdown hampers.

UNfortunately another piece of freeware that can be classified as crapware.

Avatron Air Display was the culprit for me as well. As soon as I quit this from the menu bar the system went into a restart as intended. Update complete.

I just wanted to add my kudos to the list. I had given up on solving my inability to shut down or restart. I've been putting up with it for nearly a year. But recently, I came back determined to fix the problem. I had gotten rid of my digidesign application files a long time ago to no effect. Someone in this discussion suggested removing the hidden digidesign kext files. That did the trick. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
