Q: Mavericks to Yosemite upgrade. Still possible?

Hi, I'm aware that El Capitan is the latest software for the iMac. I am currently running Mavericks and rather than upgrade to El Capitan, I would prefer to upgrade to the last version available of Yosemite. Is this possible still, or am I forced to upgrade to El Capitan instead? Any help would be great. Thank you.

Yosemite is no longer available for download from the App Store.

If you don't already own it, Yosemite is no longer available.

I rang Apple a couple of hours ago and they suggested that rather than go part way in upgrading to Yosemite, I should upgrade to El Capitan. However I wanted to tread cautiously and opted for trying to upgrade to Yosemite in spite of what had been recommended. Then, on searching for Yosemite in the App Store I couldn't find it. This will be why: it is no longer available! But why didn't they tell me I no longer had an option? Mmmmm...

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive (step 1), then the Partition tab (step 2), and select the partition. Using the /// at the bottom move it up (step 3) until the size box decrease by about 50 GB. Select the newly created space and hit the + button (step 4). Name it something and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format (step 5). Then hit the Apply button(step 6). Download the installer from the App Store and when it starts, point it at the new partition. You might want to make a copy of the installer outside the Applications folder to avoid having to re-download it in the future. Once installed, restart with the option/alt key held down, select the new partition and reboot. Test away.

Hi Eric. Thank you. Such a detailed and helpful reply. What I hadn't mentioned in my original question was the fact that I had some new software to install, which only runs on OS X 10.0 or higher. Because of this, I needed to upgrade to something newer, be it Yosemite or El Capitan. Since my original posting, (and after having received the first couple of replies to it),  I decided I had no option and upgraded to El Capitan. So far I have had no problems. Long may this continue!

Once again, thank you all for your replies.
