Q: RAM upgrade for iMac 2011 27" i5

I am a professional photographer and maxed out my RAM slots back in 2013 to the Apple recommended 16GB (4x4GB)

Currently running:

Mid 2011 iMac

27" i5

4x4GB RAM

El Capitan 10.11.5

I saw significant speed improvements at the time but now things are starting to slow down.

I run Lightroom almost every day, while Numbers, Reminders, Safari are open, and occasionally other programs like Pages, Filemaker, or Photoshop.  I shut down most nights of the week.  The past two weeks between the latest OS updates (El Capitan 10.11.5) and Lightroom upgrades (6.6), things have been noticeably slower, laggy, and occasional crashes.

The other day I received a pop-up about my memory being exceeded.  I emptied trash, cleared out caches, and restarted, but the system is still lagging.

I've read conflicting reports that my model should be able to support 32GB, but then I read only the i7 27" models will support 32GB.  I've also read a swap out of my SSD (which I do not feel qualified for) would improve speeds as well.

Thoughts?  Can I replace my 16GB with new 32GB?  Would just fresher 4x4GB do the trick?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Go for the 32GB. You can check that with the advisory tool in Crucial, or OWC. Both very reliable vendors.

Also, download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. This should help to see if some software is gettingI in the way. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

    Glad you removed the adware.

In addition, you don’t need any Seagate drivers or software. Seagate drives on OS X work better without them.

I would remove ProTec6b: Path: /Library/StartupItems/ProTec6b from StartUp Items

Also com.aladdin.aksusbd looks like Aladdin is doing nothing for you.

When you're finished run another EtreCheck report and post it. It also would be helpful to run an EC without conneceted peripherals and see how that effects your runtime.

Your machine can accommodate 32GB of RAM. However in most cases 16GB is enough. There might be something going on with your installation, so I'd recommend posting an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it to your reply to this post.

If you would like more info on what EtreCheck is, simply click the link and you will find a description of the app.

I don't use the Seagate drivers, got rid of that startup item too.  Seems to be processing a little quicker but Lightroom still froze this morning.

Here's the Etrecheck without the externals on.  I noticed the killed processes at the end due to lack of RAM.  Time for those 32GB I'm guessing!!

Something is using a lot of RAM on your system. Please run Activity Monitor to see what is dominating the RAM. If you have never used Activity Monitor please read Use Activity Monitor to read system memory and determine how much RAM is being used (OS X Mountain Lion and earlier) - A…

Aside from my apps, it seems kernel_task is using a lot of ram.  I do have a lot of Safari windows open right now.

Here are my top memory offenders

I run Lightroom almost every day, while Numbers, Reminders, Safari are open, and occasionally other programs like Pages, Filemaker, or Photoshop.

FWIW, I have a Late 2015 27" iMac w/32GB and there is no way I would have so many apps open at one time.

I could have 64GB of RAM installed and I still wouldn't.

All browsers will use a lot of RAM when lots of tabs are open. There isn't anything you can do about the Kernel Task though. Google apps tend to use a LOT of RAM so please avoid when you can. Also I see LR is an offender and something called photography.tutsplus.... is using a lot. Flash is also and offender so if you can curtail using apps that use Flash that would help.

That being said, you may be back at square one and need to upgrade to 32GB. As I mentioned earlier both OWC and Crucial make kits for your machine. I have 24GB installed in my 2011 27" and it has worked that way just fine for about 4-5 years.

If you plan on keeping the computer, you may want to upgrade to add a SSD. This is dramatically improve startup, shutdown and file retrieval performance.  You can have both a SSD and HD installed on the 2011's, I did this upgrade several years ago and it works like a dream. I use the SSD as my startup volume and keep my apps and critical data files on it. I then use the HD for just storage. If that is of any interest let me know and I can give you some further advice.
