Q: iTunes backup restore taking forever

I got a new iPhone today to replace my broken one and I am trying to restore the backup from iTunes. I had around 50Gb of content in my old phone.

The remaining time to finish the backup started in 2 hours, and is steadily increasing (to about 27 hours at the time of this post).

Is there something wrong with my system?

I am recovering a 9.3.2 iOS backup to an iPhone 6 (64 gb) on a macOS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) on a 2013 iMac. I am using the lightning cable to restore the backup, not the wifi.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), iOS 9.3.2

    Hello pablofromwellington,

Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how important it is to get all your data for your new phone! Sorry to hear it was a replacement for a broken phone, but congratulations on the new iPhone!

I first want to recommend you check this help article from Apple: If your iTunes backup couldn‘t be completed or you can‘t restore from a backup. That has the most common causes and resolutions for your issue.

Using third party virus protection, firewalls, or proxies that hide your identity from the internet, may also cause your issue. These do not have to be set up on the computer, but can also be set up on the router. Some security apps or programs also do this, but are only called Security or VPN. There are literally hundreds of such apps that block incoming ports which will not allow the feature to work. You may wish to check this help article from Apple to try to get around these: Resolve issues between iTunes and third-party security software.

Thanks again for checking out the Apple Support Communities. Have a great rest of your day.
