Q: mid 2009 macbook pro 5.4 problems

i'm trying to keep this thing as long as possible, but i'm getting discouraged.  it's overheating, display is enlarging out of nowhere over and over again, trackpad is not moving the mouse well.  i had some additional ram installed, but that hasn't helped, though it is running a little faster.  i had a look inside, it's not dusty and the fan doesn't look dirty.  trackpad clicks down so i'm assuming the battery isn't swollen, though it probably needs to be replaced at this point.  i'm running a virus scan - OS X malcol was detected this evening - don't know how much of a problem this is.  i upgraded the operating system to el capitan.  i did buy a mouse for it and it seems to be working okay, but i don't know if that did anything to my MBP.  screen enlarges with or without the mouse connected.  display enlarging and shrinking by itself as i am typing this!  crazytown!  any ideas what might be going on here?

Why don't you run an Apple Hardware Test.  It may offer some clues:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

Download and post an Etrecheck report:

    Ciao.

OS X has a feature to 'enlarge' the display - are you sure that you are not accidentally activating that?

OS X Mountain Lion: Zoom content on the screen

http://osxdaily.com/2012/01/02/enable-screen-zoom-in-mac-os-x-lion/ (this has other explanations & images)

The keyboard shortcut is listed on that first Apple page - try that to see if it stops. ctrl+scroll seems top be the default way to trigger it if it is enabled.

How is the Mac behaving? Are you already having strange scrolling & cursor moving issues? It is possible for the trackpad to cause strange input, especially if the battery is swollen. You can't assume that the battery isn't swollen unless you know what you are looking at, it is also possible that you put it back together incorrectly which can cause issues like this.

Do you have an Apple store nearby? I would take it to them for a free checkup & advice.

You can also try booting from other disks or in single user mode, do you know what they are?

You can save it as a text file, then open that file, select the text then copy & paste it here, otherwise you should be able to select the report & copy & paste it directly from EtreCheck.

The Edit menu has the copy & paste commands.

Start by removing Symantec, Clamxav, and MacKeeper. They are not needed and may cause problems.

    +1

There are no viruses that can attack Mac.OS X. So, anti-virus programs are selling a cure for a disease that doesn't exist. And they are renowned for borking Mac systems. Symantec has been bricking Macs for a very long time.

A Mac can pick up malware but not if you just use common sense. You really have to actively invite some malware in for it to happen. That means downloading and knowingly giving your password for it to download. Mac provides all the protection you need with SIP (System Integrity Protection).I About System Integrity Protection on your Mac - Apple Support

If you do happen to download malware you can use MalwareBytes to get rid of it. Malwarebytes was developed by one of our own colleagues here in ASC. It gets rave reviews and is about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac. If you use torrents, don't. Torrents are a good way to pick up malware because anything can hitchhike in on a download.

Safari pop-ups are different and easier to deal with. In Safari 9.1 and later just close the window. For earlier versions force quit and hold the shift key while restarting Safari.

Finally, stay away from programs that purport to "clean your Mac". They can do damage to your system. Your Mac needs no cleaning in the first place. All the cleaning that is necessary is taken care routinely by OS X.

Let me add that if you no longer have a Blackberry, rid the MBP of all RIM files.

    Ciao.

i'm trying to do an AHT but the steps aren't working.  i shut down my macbook, turn it on and press 'D' before the grey screen appears, but it boots up anyway.  i've tried it by combining 'D' with command and option as well, but that isn't working either.  any ideas?
