Q: 12% drop in battery overnight..confused

Last night I closed lid on my MacBook and 12 hours later, it went from 100% to 88%.

I ran the EtreCheck and will post it here..trying to figure out what is happening.

Thank you

    College student? Or Public employee?

Still didn't do anything I suggested.

also, when connected to the internet, run ipconfig && netstat , copy paste.

Why? What you suggested makes no sense.

It means there are processes still running even though the screen is closed.

When the screen is open you will consume power at rate A

when the screen is closed you will consume power at rate B

when the machine is off you will consume power at C

    A > B > C > 0

C will be self discharge of the battery

B will be A + power consumed for running processes

    A will A + B + active processes

Again why not connect the AC adapter to the computer?

I as asking gasawyer2110 what he was talking about.

I travel a lot and don't always have an opportunity to plug it in. Also I shouldn't have to leave it plugged in. I have had a MacBook Air (2013) that I could leave unplugged for days and only lose 1%. So a brand new MacBook that will lose 10%-20% over night is not normal. Power nap is off, nothing is happening in the background that should be causing this.

Just because "plugging it in" is a good option for you, it's not the answer. Maybe the best option for me is to go back to my old MacBook Air!

    Mac Man is 100% correct.

OBVIOUSLY if you leave it plugged in overnight that would mean full battery...are you trying to be funny?

The point is that not everything works that way for some of us.

I might use my Mac in the AM, close the lid, head out the door, and get back to hotel or home later that evening...10-12 hours later...so that being the case, how does your scenario help me there?

Second, sometimes I have all my stuff packed in my bag and ready to go.  The idea of plugging in overnight is not the question.  That's the obvious answer.

Mac Man is 100% correct; I too had a MacAir 2014 where I would close the lid and 12 hours later, I'd still be at 100% or maybe lose 1% in that span.  So it's something with this device and perhaps the wifi adapter that Apple uses for this particular machine.  It would be helpful to not ask the obvious and allow those with the issue to resolve said problem.

Now, are Mac Man and I the ONLY people that are seeing this kind of battery loss overnight?  No one else?  If not, I'd love to know what setting there are for those that are not seeing this.

Might not matter as I suspect it's something to do with my home router.  I am not seeing any real loss of battery when I sleep my MacBook and I am on the road.

gasawyer - I will run it but run it from where?

Please bare with me as I am not as proficient at dealing with these issues as you might be.

I'll do what you suggest to see if there is an issue but need to better understand HOW to run what you are asking.

You may not need 10 Google helpers running (using 1.4GB of your 8GB space)

So the bigger question is how do I prevent the Google helpers from running.  I am inclined to remove Chrome from my MacBook but there is a program I use in gmail that has an extension I need to log email into Salesforce.

    Thoughts?

Chrome is junk, get rid of it.

Ok...so that being said, if I did get rid of it, do I just remove it like normal or is there an uninstaller version so it doesn't leave anything behind?  I read a lot of stuff on that.

Second...Chrome does suck more battery and the helper runs, so perhaps that is what wakes it up. BUT I use Google Apps for business and Chrome uses an extension, Cirrus Insight, that connect my email to Salesforce.com.  Safari doesn't.

To remove it properly you should ask Google, if you think you need it, well it's your choice, I would not let it near one of my Macs.

@spasel @macman Not sure if it is 100% the same issue but I have had similar behaviour as well.  Not yet regular enough for me to get to a clear set of circumstances that cause it but I have had:

    - 0% battery in the morning after sleeping the computer at night / before travel / a day of meetings

    - Runaway(?) kernel_task usage of >100% cpu which don't appear to be driven by (1) peripherals e.g. displays, i/o or audio devices or (2) other concurrently running programs

    - Hundreds/thousands of idle wakeups from kernel_task in activity monitor, along with persistently high CPU usage and >1.5GB of RAM usage when computer is otherwise idle

Will update if I find any solution.  Have you had any luck in the last month?

It's interesting but I think it was somehow tied to my wifi router.

Every time I went on the road, I would lose 0% overnight in battery when sleeping.  From home it was 9-12% overnight and like you said, hundreds of idle wakeups.

But strangely it hasn't happened recently and that might be due to the fact that I lost power for half a day and everything in my house basically did a hard reset.  I think it has been since that time that I have not had the issue.  I'm going to test it again tonight...2 nights in a row and I remained at 100% battery overnight.

Since your MacBook's WiFi radio is turned off when in Sleep mode, I doubt that your router has anything to do with it.

Why would the wifi be turned off and it's still able to get emails when it is closed and sleeping? I get notifications that require wifi and always have.

Second, when I am on the road, it doesn't do this at all.  Away from home, I close it at 100% and it's at 100% when I get up and hit the road.  Not the case at home.
