Q: MBP very slow; 'kernel_task' issue?

My Retina MBP, mid '12, 10.10.5, is often running very slow - often to the point where mouse clicks and movements, or keyboard inputs, take several seconds to register, and Final Cut Pro becomes unusable.

 

Activity Monitor suggests that kernel_task is hogging resources:

The third screen grab was taken when FCPX was not running, so I am pretty sure the issue is not FCPX-related.

 

Can anyone suggest a way of sorting this out?

 

(I found a suggestion that involved deleting a Model ID-related file from /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources, but I can't find my model ID in the list)

    Oddly enough I'd just downloaded and run it before I read your post... it suggested removing a couple of Safari adware extensions, which I did. I also ran Onyx and used it to clear caches etc.

     

    Things seem better, though I haven't been using FCPX in the past couple of days...

    Update: still way, way slow when using FCPX. Unfortunately, 'not using FCPX' is not an option.

    Hello zogster,

    I would start by uninstalling BlackMagic Design and Radio Silence. Those are the two most likely candidates.

     

    Make sure to use only the vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions.

     

    If that doesn't work, keep going with anything listed in Kernel Extensions and LaunchDaemons/Agents.

    Thanks - will do as you suggest.

     

    I suspect I'll have to re-install the BlackMagic stuff at some point, as I sometimes need it to capture video streams with their hardware interfaces... but it's not something I have to do all the time.

    Why do you have Matrox Compress HD installed, does that not need a PCLe compress card?

    That's a good question! I guess that means I can lose that also…

     

    I think it's probably there because it was installed with some other Matrox software for a thing I was doing about 18 notes ago - though the hardware I was using was a Thunderbolt interface

    well, an app like that with so many entries in the system, may need a lot of resources when it tries to find the compression card.

    I would suggest you remove all entries in SystemPreferences->Users&->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath. You can start whatever you need by hand.

    Thanks for the advice... I have to return to this issue as things are still slow, often unacceptably so, when using FCP and sometimes Safari.

     

    (I removed Intego, Black Magic and Radio Silence, along with other tidying up that I should have noted but didn't!)

     

    In the last week I was using FCP quite a lot, and it has been maddeningly slow at times. At one point I tried using it without a second monitor, but while that initially seemed to speed things up everything slowed down again before long. (I recall reading some advice that a second monitor can slow things down, and FCP is in some ways optimised for use on a single screen)

     

    EtreCheck results are below... I note that it says performance is 'Good', though that does not represent how it has been working recently!

     

    If there's nothing obvious in the results here, should I try a clean system re-install?

    Try the below before considering a reinstall.

     

    Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

     

    Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Prefeences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

     

    Isolating an issue by using another user account

     

    If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
