What iCloud Service are you referring to? When you sign up for iCloud, you get an iCloud.com email address, but you can sign in to iCloud or receive Mail at either your primary Apple ID address or your iCloud.com address.

Because you can set up a brand new iCloud account without an Apple ID, when you do that, the iCloud.com becomes your Apple ID. So, you have both. They are interchangeable.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Gail.

I am a photographer and need secure backup for my work, so I signed up for 1TB specifically to back up my MacBookPro data and all of my client and personal photos. This brings up a new issue.

Is it true that Apple iCloud.com requires either Aperture or iPhoto to manage the backup photographs?

I use Adobe CC Suite for all of my photographs, so it would be a burden if I cannot link iCloud.com directly to the photos on my Mac portable or other attached storage systems.

    It doesn't.

iCloud is a service that you log into using your Apple ID, your Apple ID can be either an iCloud address or a non iCloud address, if you use a non iCloud address there is no further requirement to create an iCloud address unless you want to do so.

so I signed up for 1TB specifically to back up my MacBookPro data

You can't use iCloud to back up your Mac

What I believe you are referring to here is syncing photos to iCloud.com using the iCloud photo library. Firstly it requires Photos and secondly, you shouldn't consider this to be a back up.

I use Adobe CC Suite for all of my photographs, so it would be a burden if I cannot link iCloud.com directly to the photos on my Mac portable or other attached storage systems.

You should back up all the files on your Mac, not just your Photos. A good strategy is to use Time Machine (or other 3rd party software) together with an external drive and back up regularly.

As Winston said, iCloud Photo Library is not an archival nor a backup library. It is designed as a source library for sharing all photos with any device or Mac that is signed into the same Apple/iCloud account that has iCloud Photo Library turned on. You can then "store" that complete library on an iDevice or a Mac in either an "Optimized" or a "Standard" format when you turn on iCloud Photo Library on that iDevice or Mac.

However, as it is a sharing service, any changes (including deletions) that you make anywhere affect the Library directly. If you add new photos the Library and all linked devices/Macs get the new photos. If you delete photos, all linked devices/Macs have the photo deleted.

Here are a couple of iCloud Photo Library Support Articles that may help:
