The only visible sign that a charge is taking place is if you go to settings > remotes and devices > remote.

Carolyn, it may not charge as fast as from a wall adapter but it does charge from a computer. If I recall correctly they said the same about the iPad and although the iPad never says it's charging, if you leave it over night you'll notice the increase in charge. The Apple TV Remote does indicate it's charging though in the settings when it's connected to a computer.
