Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities to get help with the audio issue you're experiencing on some phone calls. Based on your information, I'm understanding that sometimes when you receive a phone call, you can't hear the other person. If you get a subsequent incoming call, or make outgoing call yourself, you have no trouble hearing. Since I rely on my phone to keep in touch every day, I know how important it is to hear on each and every call and want to make sure you have no more trouble!
The article linked below will help you troubleshoot your call audio; go through the steps suggested, testing after each. You can stop once the issue has been resolved.
