Q: 10.11.6 update has crippled my Mac Pro

Having trouble after update to 10.11.6 - System preferences panes won't open, can't seem to find any app that will open - reports of apps damaged, including disk utility, console, etc. Restart and shut down/restart don't clear it. Came looking for reports - problem seems not universal. Had successful update on my MacBook Pro, but my Mac Pro now seems in dire straits. Went the Recovery route and re-inatalled OS X . 10.11.6 was installed. Still no joy. Application folder shows only a bare few, and not the Apple applications. Cannot open any System Preferences panes. Safe Boot does not complete. Hardware OK - can boot successfully to a clone (CCC) of only a few days ago. Could do a restore (from Time Machine BU), but that is a last resort. Looking for others facing similar challenges and their success at resolving the issues.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 3.2 GHz Quad Xeon 16GB RAM, 12TB HD

Thanks, but that horse has already left the barn. Although I use Time Machine, this laptop hasn't been connected to the Time Machine drive for several weeks. I do have a backup, but will lose recent data. Not such a big deal. IF I can connect to time machine, I will be able to replace all my preferences with older ones.

I have been lulled into complacency. Before today, I had never seen an issue like this arise from an operating system update in 20 years of Mac use.

    Hi Diane

    >I suggest that you add a clone backup to your update strategy.

I do run backups via CCC it's been terrific, and with 4 internals, and 16 external drives on this beast I wouldn't live without it. I would have created a backup if it was a larger incremental update, but with the number of smaller updates I have become accustomed to them being minor and without any hiccups. This little particular .dot update seems to have been an unusual case. Glad that I did have my clone though. The OS drive only contains OS and apps, all working files and docs reside elsewhere, which tends to limit the damage. Full clones of each drive and paired clones of any daily work files. In a pinch I can be up and running in short order.

I was just being curious about the other process that some people had mentioned about duplicating the user/Library and moving it to a new account.

    regards,

    j

Apparently the problem is not damaged apps or anything nearly that bad. If you can login as a Guest, and everything suddenly works, the answer lies somewhere in your User Library files – perhaps a bad preference file. I have managed to delete my Finder pref file but that did b=not do the trick. Now I'm looking at CloudKit as a possibility.

I am also struggling to find a solution for this - deleting the LaunchServices/csstore files as has been recommended also did not fix my issue.  Booting into safe mode changes nothing.   Verbose mode shows no obvious errors.

System logs are full of errors, so many that I can't pinpoint which is the issue.  I did see many lines related to LaunchServices so i thought that clearing all the csstore files would do it.  Found 8 of them and still after rebooting same issue occurs.  When I tried it other times, theres now only one .csstore

You don't duplicate the User's Library but you can copy some of the data in your User's Library via Shared folder to a new User. Since the problem most likely is in your User's Library you have to be careful what you do bring over. Don't want to bring over the old baggage to the new User.

Occasionally the problem is in the root Library. This is where a clean install is warranted. Users that have done a clean install since Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion should definitely consider doing a clean install before they update to Sierra.

I run my clone every night and Time Machine is always running. You never know when there is going to be a problem. Just like you buckle up every time you drive your car. You never know if you are going to be in an accident.

I keep my files on an external like you. Makes running El Capitan and the public beta for Sierra easy to do. I do not share the User's Library. It's always on the boot drive.

Mac os 10.11.6 dies in install, beach ball on reboot, early 2011 MacBook Pro (8,2) and 2014 rMBP dead in same way. thank god for CCC. Hey Apple you are the richest company in the world how about some software QC.Maybe if enough people post the problem Apple will fix it.

as I suspected there seems to be more than one problem people are dealing with. There is definitely one problem caused by corrupt LaunchServices file(s) and one or more problems caused by other issues. And it seems that having lsd crash reports doesn't necessarily mean that the cause are corrupt LaunchServices file(s). That is a bummer.

Whether or not the Finder or Finder preferences are one source of problems is uncertain. The Finder is probably started by the LaunchService.

For those people who want to try the method deleting the LaunchService files but have difficulties with the command line I suggest to follow the procedure below:

    1. Get the freeware "EasyFind" from the App Store.

    2. Boot from an external drive.

    3. Use "EasyFind" to locate and delete the LaunchService files on your trouble installation.

How to do that see screenshot below. Select your problem drive. Scroll down and select the folder "private".

Click search. Select all LaunchService files and click delete.

       EasyFind.jpg

    4. ReBoot you internal drive. That will rebuild your LaunchService file(s).

If that doesn't work then you have a LaunchService independent problem.

If the "deleting the LaunchService files" method doesn't work and you don't have a Time Machine backup then I suggest to follow the procedure below:

    1. Boot from an external drive.

    2. Make a backup of the trouble OS X using SuperDuper!. The free SuperDuper! version will do.

    3. Delete the trouble OS X installation with the Disk Utility and then reinstall OS X 10.11.6

    4. With the Migration Assistant import Applications, Users, Other files and folders, Computer and Network Settings

from the backup to the new OS X installation

The Disk Utility and the Migration Assistant applications are both in the Application/Utilities folder.

If that does not solve the problem then

    1. Create a new user account

    2. Into that new user account import all user document, music, video files etc. from the corrupt user folder backup.

Recreate you user account manually including all settings

    3. Delete the corrupt user account

I updated and my mac started acting crazy. None of the icons in the menu bar are showing up. i can see the names when i roll over the icon. opening the app seems to help with the icon appearing. I ran cleanmymac it found nothing. restarting didn't seem to help either. I had apps opening on their own that didn't even click on when the mac first turned on. Screen turned black a few times and came back on. Looks like I'm gonna try and reinstall OS X if this keeps up. No more updates for me if i can get my mac back the way it was. wish Time Machine could go back to last updates.

Never run this or any other "cleaner". All they can do is cause you grief. If you had "cleaned" your mac before it may well have put on the current spot.

I would try running the 10.11.6 Combo Update on the machine. If it doesn't fix it, reinstall the system (properly backed up, of course!).

Just did that. System re-booted after instal and all icons, apps and drives are present as before. But my problem still persists. Can't restart or shutdown from the "Apple" icon in the menu bar. I have to force quit using power switch. Which is dangerous, I know.

Please run Etrecheck and post its report. Are you running some Wacom tablet software?

@Luis- I have been running EtreCheck a number of times and the only red flag has to do with an Adobe launch Agent which I have deleted. I am now downloading the 10.11.6 combo instal to see if that helps any.

Also, no Wacom software is loaded. I'll send up the report as soon as it's finished.
