Q: Kernel Panic?

Can someone tell me why I got a Kernel Panic? I picked up my computer while it was on AC, the bottom was warm. Opened the lid, and it was a black screen (no display). I had to hold down the power button to shut it down.

The only thing I can think of that has changed in the last few days is I installed the update to El Capitan 10.11.6. Otherwise, no issues to be had. I believe this is the first kernel panic I've ever had on this Mac in the last year or so I've had it.

Any ideas? Thank you, in advance.

    Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

    That is not a kernel panic

    Kernel Panic reports: "/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports"

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546>

    <http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553>

    The panic report should have "panic" in the file name.

    If you have more than one, post a few, as it will show a pattern.  And do not abbreviate.

    The information I pasted above in my original post is from the only file file named .panic in the folder you mentioned.

    That is an odd-looking panic report which I've found usually means a hardware fault. This may have been a one-off event.

    If you don't have any other panics, I wouldn't worry about it. But, if it starts happening more, take it to an Apple Store (Genius Bar) or an Apple certified repair facility to have it checked out.

    I am wildly speculating here

    panic(cpu 4 caller 0xffffff800d99b084): launchd exited (signal 9, exit status 0 CS_KILLED)

    Signal 9 is never triggered by an event.  Signal 9 can only be intentionally sent by one process to another.  Signal 9 tells a process to quit.

    launchd is the one process that must always be running on OS X (it is the equivalent of 'init' or 'systemd' on other Unix systems).  It is the first process started, and it controls the system startup once OS X boots far enough to support running processes.

    No one should be sending launchd a quit request (aka Signal 9).

    It would appear that either process with 'root' privileges sent signal 9 to Process ID 1 (launchd's PID is 1), or a process with 'root' privileges accidentally (as in programming bug) sent signal 9 to launchd, or a hardware failure caused some software to misbehave, resulting in OS X thinking someone sent signal 9 to launchd.

    Since launchd must exist, I think when it received Signal 9, it decided the world has come to an end, and launchd intentionally told the system to panic.  And since launchd is the 'Boss' process, OS X did as it was told.

    Again, wild speculation.

    As to your EtreCheck output.  That is the most squeaky clean report I have ever seen.  There is nothing in the report to indicate it was 3rd party additions responsible (many times 3rd party additions is responsible for panic, but you do not have any of the 3rd party additions that might cause a panic).

    Since you have a fairly new Mac, I suspect it is still under the 1 year warranty (for at least a few more days).  I would suggest you make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store and have them run their extensive hardware diagnostics on your system.  Also show them the panic report so that you have established that this started before your warranty ended, just in case it does turn out to be a hardware problem.

    Before taking your Mac to a Genius Bar, make a complete backup.  I suggest you make 2 backups using 2 different backup utilities (Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner (1 month fully enabled demo mode), SuperDuper (free for full clones), etc...).  You never know what might go wrong while your Mac is out of your hands, and you data is not something that will be easy to reproduce without a backup.

    Thank you, both, for your help and insight. When it happened, I came home and sat down to open my laptop. The notebook was connected to AC, and sleeping. I opened the lid, it had a black screen but the keyboard was warm to the touch. Tapping the keyboard wouldn't wake it, either.

    I finally had to hold down the power button to get it to shut off, then turn it back on. When it booted up, I got the following prompts.

    IMG_0037.jpg

    After it booted into El Capitan, no further issues. I ran the Apple Diagnostics test to be on the safe side and this is what came up.

    IMG_0038.jpg

    I went ahead and reset the NVRAM and SMC just to be on the safe side, and no issues have resurfaced (knock on wood). It's the first time this Mac has ever Kernel Panic'd since I got it so I'm concerned. I do have AppleCare 3yr protection plan. The only software change I've made in the last few days was I upgraded to 10.11.6 from 10.11.5.

    Curious though. Could a dodgy AC adapter, or perhaps a MagSafe 1 with a MagSafe 1-2 Adapter cause a Mac to fail to wake, or possibly kernel panic? I had a flaky MagSafe 1-2 adapter replaced by Apple about two weeks ago, no problems since but curious if it left some residual issue behind.

    I would say unlikely.  The only complaint I've seen about power supplies is that they will not charge the Mac.

    Any other issues would most likely affect the power regulator logic on the motherboard, and that should not cause a panic, on in your case Signal 9 being sent to launchd.

    Having 3 year AppleCare gives you at least another 2 years if something goes wrong.  But if this happens again, do not live with it, have your Mac looked at.
