Q: AirDrop being started. What? Why?
Finder > Go > Utilities > Console. Message: "Starting AirDrop server for user 501 on wake" Finder > Go > AirDrop. This AirDrop window tells me that my Wi-Fi is OFF and I want Wi-Fi to be OFF. Question: Who or What is "user 501"? What is the meaning of the phrase: "on wake" ?
Here are a few entries from Message Inspector:
Facility: com.apple.sharingd
Sender: sharingd
SenderMachUUID: 88E7DA36-252E-333C-86B0-82EA1933C50C
I own one, and only one, Apple product and that is an iMac with OS X El Capitan version 10.11.5. Thus, I have no need for AirDrop. Yet this message tells me that AirDrop is being started for user 501. What? Why?
Many "Thanks" for your assistance,
Dave

User 501 is YOU!
In any Unix system, the first user account is numbered 501, and the next 502 and so on. That is just how it is done.
No worries, just things working as they should. You don't have to use Airdrop, like you don't use many of the things the OS is capable of, but they still have to be there.
