but I don't want desktop Spaces at the top of my screen to function.
Not sure what you mean here, maybe a screen shot would help with the terminology.
The full screen apps when you move your mouse to the top of the screen is mission control, and there is no way to turn this off being central to the os x.

Jul 23, 2016 8:10 AM in response to DTfromPhillyby pokey b,I think you are wanting the software (Mission Control) to not do something that is part of it's main function. I'm assuming you've checked out Launchpad as an alternative and know about using command + the tab key to jump or switch between applications(?). If so, you may need to check out other 3rd party apps that do what it is you want.

Jul 23, 2016 9:30 AM in response to DTfromPhillyby Barney-15E,Can you explain in more detail what you don't like/want to happen?
I thought it was just me, but it appears many hear don't quite understand what it is you want.
You don't have to create any new Desktops (new name, pretty much same as Spaces).
However, if you are using apps in Full Screen mode, that's how that works. No way around it. Each Full Screen app exists in its own Desktop in Mission Control.

Jul 23, 2016 12:53 PM in response to DTfromPhillyby DTfromPhilly,It is the strip at the top showing my desktop and a fullscreen of Chrome that I do not want. I know there is no setting on the system prefs to get rid of this but I was hoping for a terminal code or something that would take care of it.
The strip does not provide anything of use when I can just use the hot corners or apple-tab to get to an app window that I want. i prefer keyboard controls but the strip actually makes it harder to move around with apple-tab (and fullscreen) which is why I want to get rid of it.
If apple-tab would just go back to the fullscreen window that would be fine, but there's no setting for that either.

There is no terminal command to remove mission control, being an integral part of the OS X work flow.
Use Mission Control on your Mac - Apple Support
Use two Mac apps side by side in Split View - Apple Support
I suspect you may be in a minority, but please make your voice heard:

It looks to me you could clean up your Desktop and free up valuable real estate if you took advantage of what mission control has to offer and four finger swipe up.
personally I find it indispensable:
