Q: Create bootable usb on Mavericks

Hi everyone -

I have Mavericks and I'm trying to create a bootable drive with Mavericks using createinstallmedia function.

Having read Apple tutorial Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support I have maneged to do it before several times.

1. So I've put my installer on the Application folder

2. I've create a volume on my USB drive called Cap

3. And I typed: sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Cap –applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app –nointeraction

4.HoweverI keep on getting the following error message:"You must specify both the volume and install application path"

on the Terminal prompt.

I just dont understand why I get that that as I've checked and recheck the installer is in the Applications folder and the volume is indeed called "Cap". I have even dragged and dropped the installed Mavericks app on the terminal which indeed gives me "/Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app" and the for the volume I get the crrect oath "/Volumes/Cap" for the volume so everything seems correct..

So I dont understand why it does not work now, even though I did it several times before ....

Can someone tell what I am doing wrong here.

Thanks !!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Are you sure you formatted the usb correctly? Mac OS Extended ( Journaled ) and a GUID partition.

You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program which will do all the work for you.

    Hello -

Yes, actually I have partitioned my USB drive with with Mac OS Extended ( Journaled ) and a GUID partition and created 2 partitions, one for Mavericks and one for El Capitan. I manage without problems to have both install on my usb, then when new version of El Capitan came out a couple of days ago, I decided to add delete the 10.11.5 and put instead 10.11.6 on that partition (from my Mavericks Mac) but this is where I have the problem described earlier....

However, I could understand that it does not recognised the usd derive and that I'd have to repartition it but I dont understand why the error message also says it can find my 'Applications' folder path on my Mac ...???

Yes I have looked at it and it seems it would work just fine but the issue is that I have partitioned my usd drive in 2 and that by default diskmaker erases everything i.e. all partitions so it would only be installing one boot where i'd like to have a dual boot drive as i had before....

Did you post the actual command you used from Terminal or did you retype it here?

Remove all the arguments & read the help output…

Usage: createinstallmedia --volume <path to volume to convert> --applicationpath <path to Install OS X Mavericks.app> [--force]

Arguments--volume, A path to a volume that can be unmounted and erased to create the install media.

--applicationpath, A path to copy of the OS installer application to create the bootable media from.

--nointeraction, Erase the disk pointed to by volume without prompting for confirmation.

    Example: createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install OS X Mavericks.app

Your example uses single hyphens at the start of the 'application-path' & the 'nointeraction' argument.

I'd suggest removing the nointeraction option to see if it throws clearer errors too.

I'm not sure if the process erases the entire partition table, so have a backup of the other partition as you seem to be trying to keep the partition structure, sudo has no undo
