Q: Is there a way to check if Wifi is waking up MacBook?

I am trying to resolve my battery drop of 10-12% in 12 hours when MacBook is sleeping overnight...Is there a way to run a report that shows if my MacBook is waking up randomly trying to connect to wifi or dropping wifi and picking it up, etc?

Activity Monitor says No Idle Wake Ups but maybe there's a different way to check it?  If so can you provide info on how to perform that check?

Thanks for the help

Run the Console utility in your Applications > Utilities folder.

Be certain it is set up to display the log list.  (View > Show Log List from Console's menu.  If "Hide Log List" appears instead, you're good.)    Check "All messages" on the left side.

Thank you.  I have performed that.  There is quite a bit of activity and messages so I am not really sure what I am looking for.  I can tell you that there's a LOT of messages and activity during the time the computer is actually closed and sleeping.

What in particular should I be searching for?  There are a few messages that indicate it was waking up and performing some sort of activity.

I also removed GoToMeeting from Citrix as that had a few messages.

Now, here is something interesting.  I am not at home.  I am in hotel.  Closed my laptop at 100% last night, 10:06pm, got up this AM opened it at 8am, and still at 100%.  That never happens at home.  It always jumps down 8-10%.

Perhaps something to do with my router that is provided by Verizon FIOS High Speed?  I have a wireless extender base as well.

    Thoughts?

Maybe someone from your household is using your laptop while you're sleeping?

I run that utility requested but I am somewhat of a newbie when it comes to diagnosing issues and reading what I should be looking for.

Anything else I should be looking at?  What specifically should I be looking for that could tell if it is waking?

I am 95% confident it's an issue with my wifi router for some reason but stumped on how to solve it.

When I traveled these two days, staying in hotels, I had literally ZERO battery drain when sleeping my MacBook overnight.  Ran some tests.

100% when lid is shut...100% when opened 10-12 hours later.

Then, last night, I returned home.  75% battery when I walked in the door.  Closed the lid. 66% when I opened it 10 hours later.

So tonight I will turn the wifi off and see if there is no drop at all when home.

If it turns out to be the router, any fixes for this particular machine ? Anyone else have similar issues and they have solved the problem?

    Thank you

When your Mac is in Sleep mode, wifi is turned off.

Well, that might be what it supposed to do, but I jut ran test last night and it's settled.  I turned my wifi off, shut the lid, and went to bed.  11 hours later, I am up, and sure enough, with wifi off, I am still at 100% battery life.

8 days in a row with Wifi On and lid closed = 8-12% battery loss overnight

1 night, 11 hours with Wifi off = 0% battery loss.

So now the bigger question is WHY is it happening?  It only does this while I am home.  I use Verizon FIOS with a router they provided and Wi-Fi extender that they provided.  It's a newer more improved router and had both regular and 5G wifi (apparently 5G is designed for faster speeds as long as you are close to the router).

Not really sure where to go next with this, but I don't have this issue with my phone, and I tested it on my older MacBook Air 2014 and it is not doing it on that machine either.

Well, the only thing that would make a difference like that would be your using the Power Nap feature.

Appreciate the answer.  However I have disabled that feature already for the past 4 weeks.  Not related to that.
