Q: How do I enable AirPlay to connect to ATV-3?

How do I enable AirPlay to connect to ATV-3?  I have a MBPR(early 2011) running latest update of El Capitain.  AirPlay is turned "off" in Displays, no Icon on Menu Bar.   I have ATV-3(latest update) which mirrors iPhone 4S and iPad, but not seen up by MBPR.  I have disabled firewall, removed all startup items and restarted, etc.  to no avail....  Mil gracias.
