Q: Overlay Photo Over Video?

I'm using El Capitan, but still have iMovie 8.0.6.

I want to overlay photos on the video track of a project I'm creating. I can drag a photo to the project library, but I can't seem to do much else with it.  I want to run the images over the base AV track. There is nothing in the Photos window in the bottom right when I click on that tab and I can't seem to populate it. That isn't a big deal since I only want specific images but when I drag them to the Project window, I can't seem to do much with them.

Any thoughts?

Compatibility issues have been reported with iMovie8 and El Capitan.   With El Capitan, you are best advised to use the current version of iMovie, 10.1.2.

    Okay.

If get the current iMovie, will my current project still be editable?

What about the reports that I've heard that the latest iMovie is a downgrade in capability from the previous version?

Thanks for that Rich. I guess I need to move to the new version. I just hope I can keep working on the current project with minimal disruption.

    HI, Kort,

For safety, I would suggest that you not delete iM8 until you are sure that you can preserve your project.  You should still be able to work on your project in iM8 but I would back up everything anyway.   As far as transferring your project to the current version and working on it there, some posters here have reported that they were not able to properly transfer their transitions and edits and had to redo.   Sometimes redoing can be the best option, and that would be your call after you see how everything works.  If it is feasible, you also have the option of sharing out your iM8  project at its current completion point, and then dragging that movie into iM10.   Your editing would be preserved, but future editing would be limited.   You still could cut and paste and add titles, but modifying edits already in place would likely not be possible.

    Cheers,

    Rich

Thanks Rich. So I can have both iMovies on my system concurrently?

Here's Apple Support's info re upgrades of previous versions of iMovie.

Update projects and events from previous versions of iMovie in iMovie (2014) - Apple Support

When you elect to update your projects from previous versions, they will work in the new iMovie version as well as

in the old versions.  Some posters to this forum have reported that sometimes the transitions and other editing do not carry over.  Being of a cautious nature, I still suggest that you back up your iMovie 8 to another drive until you are sure that everything is turning out the way you want.

I know for sure that iM9 can co-exist, and it appears that iM8 can too because you couldn't update your projects if it didn't.  But I haven't tried it with iM8.

My specs are similar with yours, but i use iM 10. And i don't know too how to overlay pic on video event.

Btw, how you do to can use iM 9 in imac 5K. Cause i really want to have iM 9 in my imac 5k. Tq
