Q: iMac doesn't restart from menu

Late 2013 iMac, El Capitan 10.11.5, does not restart from the main menu and does not restart from the login screen. When restart selected, the screen goes black for a bit then the cursor comes up and there things stop. I've let this sit for 5 minutes without change. I have run disk utility first aid, reset SMC, PRAM. I haver started in safe mode successfully but restart from there gives the same result. I don't think I can update to 10.11.6 since a restart is required and I doubt the update can make the restart.

In all other aspects, the iMac seems to perform properly.

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

John

Is Wacom software installed on your Mac? If so, upgrade it to the latest version. If that doesn't help uninstall the Wacom software, including possible Wacom/Bamboo items in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login.

Have you tried it with a test user (see How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support)?

It would help us to figure out which kind of issue this is.

Good idea! I just tried the test user with the same result. After selecting restart, I let it go for 10 minutes. This was my time-to-sleep setting and the screen did indeed go off. When I wiggled the mouse, the cursor came back. This seems to indicate the restart/shutdown process never starts after closing all the applications.

OK, if you don't mind us knowing what is installed on your computer, could you run EtreCheck and paste the report in here?

As Bahtina says, run EtreCheck, It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

Also, see if these Terminal commands for shutdown and restart work:

Open Terminal and at the prompt copy & paste this command to shutdown:

    sudo shutdown -h now

(You will get a lecture on the dangers of using the sudo command incorrectly)

Enter your admin password. It will be invisible.

    Press Return.

To do a restart use this command:

    sudo shutdown -r now

    Rebuild Launch Services Database

    Open Terminal

Triple click anywhere on this line to copy entire line than paste

At the prompt copy & paste this command

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -seed -domain local -domain system -domain user

Then press return. Wait for the cursor to return to the command line.

    Hi macjack,

Sounded promising but didn't change the restart behavior. I ran the suggested command line twice just to be sure. Restart never completes with the cursor still visible and responsive but everything else shut down.

    Additional thoughts and ideas appreciated.

    Thanks.

Still trying to resolve this issue - can't update to 10.11.6 until I do. I tried deleting all the cache files/folders. Isn't help. Ran some Onyx utilities without improvement.

If I download El Capitan from the App store, will it install over my existing 10.11.5? If so, this may fix whatever is ailing the GUI.

I don't think updating should be an issue, but just to make sure you should probably backup your Mac first. Do you have an external hard drive?

Well lo and behold a reinstall from the app store fixed it! The download was the latest version, 10.11.6 and it was relatively painless. (I have a daily backup with SuperDuper!)

Good solution to keep in mind when all else fails
