Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes using Wi-Fi

Use iTunes to sync information on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your computer over Wi-Fi.

This article is for syncing with iTunes using Wi-Fi. You can also sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes using USB.

Syncing allows you to share information between devices. For example, if you buy a movie on your computer, you can sync to add the movie to your iPhone.

When you sync, iTunes determines whether your iOS device or your computer has the most recent information. Then, you can choose what you want to sync.

Set iTunes to sync your iOS device over Wi-Fi

    1. Open iTunes. Make sure that you have the latest version.
    2. Use the USB cable that came with your iOS device to connect it to your computer.
    3. In iTunes, find and then click your iOS device.
    4. On the Summary tab, select "Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi."
    5. Click Apply, then disconnect the USB cable.
    6. Choose which items you want to sync, then click sync.

When the computer and the iOS device are on the same Wi-Fi network, the iOS device appears in iTunes. The iOS device syncs automatically whenever it charges and iTunes is open on the computer. Learn more aboutwhat you can sync and how to sync specific items. You can also sync your iOS device using a USB cable.

If you can't set iTunes to sync over Wi-Fi, or if sync doesn't work:

    1. Restart your computer and iOS device.
    2. Make sure that your computer and iOS device are on the same Wi-Fi network. Syncing doesn't work over an Ethernet to Wi-Fi connection.
    3. Check your firewall settings. If you use security or firewall software on your computer or router, you can get help with security software. You can also contact the router's manufacturer or check the documentation to learn how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 and UDP ports 123 and 5353.

Why won't it sync? What happens when you try? What troubleshooting have you tried? What computer OS are you using? You say that iTunes and the iPhone are up to date, but exactly what version of iOS is on the phone, and what version of iTunes is on the computer. You can see the version number of iOS in Settings>General>About>Version, and in iTunes, it is Help>About iTunes.

What computer OS are you using? Do you know what steps 3-5 are? Is it possible that you do not have anything that needs to be done in those steps? I would have to double-check with my device and iTunes to see what those steps are, to see if that makes a difference. Is there something that is not getting synced? Have you tried the diagnostic tool in iTunes?
