Q: Airplay help

I'm over a friends house that has Apple TV. I want to mirror a movie on my iPhone to his apple tv. I see the icon on my phone that recognizes my friends apple tv. When I tap the icon to mirror the movie, whatever is on his television stops, and the volume goes down. However, the movie never shows up on the screen. It's as if it recognizes that I'm trying to do something, but it just doesn't work. FYI, my friend is logged on his apple tv under his username and password and I'm logged in under mine.

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 9.3.3

Are you on your friend's WiFi?

Is the movie actually stored on your phone or are you streaming it from the internet?

When you open the iPhone Control Center and the AirPlay menu, what icon appears next to the ATV? Is it a speaker (vertical box with a circle) or a TV (horizontal box with a line under)?

FYI if my friend is watching cable when I hit the apple tv icon, the apple tv turns on, the tv switches input to the apple tv, so I can see the apple tv interface, but the movie just doesn't play.

Two suggestions. First, under AirPlay settings on the ATV there may be an option to "Play Purchases from iCloud". If this is enabled, it might be confusing the situation.

Second, if it's an ATV version 4, there may be a problem with AirPlay video starting. Do you see a blank TV screen with a progress bar at the bottom? If so, try turning AirPlay briefly off and back on. The movie will briefly play on your phone, and then may start on ATV. You may need to hit Play, of course.

Nope, still doesn't work. I get a pop up box that says "Could not connect to Apple TV".

I'm inclined to suspect it's related to your friends network environment, if you are to resolve this it may involve altering their settings or repositioning their possessions, are they up for this.
