Q: my personal hotspot will not turn off. how do i fix this? i have shut it off in settings over and over again. i have turned the phone off and restarted it. i have changed my hotspot password. nothing seems to correct this issue

my iphone 6 keeps turning itself on automatically over and over again. restarting the phone has not helped; changing the password hasnt helped; shutting it off works for only a few seconds and then it turns itself right back on. any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Why are you saying that the personal hotspot is turned on? What are you seeing that is making you think that it is on? Are you turning it off in Settings>Personal Hotspot? That switch is turning back on again, or are you seeing some other evidence that it is on?

The indicator at the top of my screen and when I see it I go into my settings and it is turned on. I flip the switch and the indicator stays off for a few seconds but then reappears. I go back into settings and have to flip the switch off again. Thanks

What troubleshooting have you tried? I don't see anything in Restrictions that would prevent you from shutting it off, but could you check to see if you have any Restrictions turned on? Also, have you tried powering the phone off/on? The next step is a reset, holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. No data will be lost.

Would you mind having to reconfigure saved networks, Wi-Fi passwords, and VPN settings?

If you are OK with setting this up again, you can reset the network settings on your iPhone (Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings).

It's a somewhat new feature (IOS 8.1 and up) called Instant Hotspot.  Unlike Personal Hotspot, devices that used your hotspot in the past (such as your iPad or MacBook) can turn on your hotspot automatically on your iPhone if your devices use the same iCloud account.  You can google "Instant Hotspot" for further information.

I don't think the feature can be disabled directly, however, if you "forget" your iPhone's wifi hotspot on your other iDevices (iPad, MBA, etc.), your Instant Hotspot will not turn itself back on any more.
