Q: How to add all photos from e.g. a year to a shared album?

I use the iPad Mini 4 with iOS 9.3.3 (and an iPhone and Apple TV4). I would like share my fotos (>5000) on the screen saver on Apple TV. For this, it appears, they have to be in a shared album. Since I have about 9000 picutes stored in the iCloud, I have to add a subset [less that 5000, that seems to be the limit :-( ]. So far I can only add picture per picture, or  group per group ("Moments", usually 1 to 10 pictures) to the shared album, which takes for ever. If I do too many in one go, iPhoto crashes. I would like to add year per year, if possible (about 500 pictures in a year), or anything else more efficient. Any ideas? Thanks for all the help I can get.

You could use more than one Shared album and switch between them.

I'm using for my Screensaver only photos that have been marked as Favorite.  Perhaps you can weed out your years a bit this way.

This page lists the maximum numbers of photos you can add to a shared album:

My Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing limits - Apple Support

The limits are there, because the Shared Albums are a free part of iCloud and do not count against your free iCloud storage.

Léonie, thank you very much. I like your suggestion. Is there an easy way move all pictures marked as Favourite into a shared album?

It would of course be all much easier, if Apple would allow to use the "Moments" view (the one on the left, not sure how they call it in English) as source for the screen saver, maybe with an option to only show Favourites

Is there an easy way move all pictures marked as Favourite into a shared album?

Do you want the photos to be ordered chronologically?

Then you cannot dump the Favorites into your Shared album all at once, because Photos may rearrange the photos if you add a large amount at the same time.

If I do too many in one go, iPhoto crashes.

Do you mean, you are using Photos? I could not get iPhoto to run on my iPad any longer, after I upgraded to iOS8 and beyond. Or are you working in iPhoto on Mac as well?

    I suggest the following:

    • Create a few standard albums - one for each month - and select the photos in the Favorites album for just one year. Add them to one of the new albums.  You may want to add only one month of related photos to each album. On a Mac you could use smart albums for this, but I hope you can recognize the relevant  photos  on your iPad in the Favorites album by looking at them.
    • Then share the photos from each monthly favorites album to your  new shared album. I hope the number of photos is small enough  in the albums to allow that.

Right, I use Photos, not iPhotos. Sorry, I am using a German OS and things are called different there, so I should be more careful what terms I use in a dialogue in English.

Thanks again for your suggestion. I can follow it, but it is a bit complicated. I may wait of iOS 10 being released in fall and hope they give the photo app a bit a brush up.

You may want to add the German names in parentheses, for example "Photos (Fotos)" or "Photos Library (Mediathek)". When in doubt, include a screenshot, or post the question in German or both English and German. Quite a few of us can reply to a question written in German. Kein Problem!

It is complicating things a lot, that essential folders and applications are having different names in thedifferent language settings.

I may wait of iOS 10 being released in fall and hope they give the photo app a bit a brush up.

As far as I can tell from the WWDC 2016 http://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2016/. , the preview of iOS10 http://www.apple.com/ios/ios10-preview/.  the next version is adding more artitificial intelligence to Photos,  mostly a better management of persons by automatic face detection and an amazing ability to search by the content of photos, categories.  I have not seen new sharing options.

But if you want to share 5000 photos at once, it might be less complicated, if you put them into a shared folder online - an FTP server or dropbox, Flickr.

Hi Léonie, thank you very much, your suggestions are very helpful. I will use a that combination of English and German names in the future. Danke!

I still hope they will improve the sharing part a little bit, like allowing to order the pictures being shared in an album.

Regarding your last suggestion, to use Dropbox or Flickr... remember, my starting point was to bring the pictures from my "Fotomediathek" onto the screen saver on my Apple TV4, which apparently only works with a shared album with all its limitations. I will hang on and see if iOS 10 brings some improvements.

You're welcome.  I don't use Apple-TV, perhaps you should look into the Apple-TV forum as well, to see, if there are other ways to do it:   https://discussions.apple.com/community/appletv
