Q: Turning on iPhone 5S for the first time?

Hello,

I just bought brand new iPhone 5 S in a store and after I searched (google) for some answers regarding to battery maintenance I am little bit confused. Some say that it is wise to drain battery till phone turns off and than recharging it completly..than some people say that is nonsense so that you must charge your phone straigh awway from the box and dont let phone to turn off..some are mentioning 3 hours procedure but I know that is nonsense..

Can you tell which procedure is the best for first time.

Thanks a lot.

Here is what I consider some good advice on charging your iPhone:

When to charge your iPhone or iPad

Really good advices...but this guy doesnt mentioning is It recomended to once a month completly drain battery untill phone turns off by itself. He says "Completely draining a Lithium battery, even once, will kill it".

People often say that once a month is neccessarily to totaly drain battery due to calibration reasons.

It does not matter at all.

Apple simply recommends that you allow a complete cycle ( full discharge, followed by a full charge) once per month.

Beyond that, it does not matter

It is not recomended by Apple anymore that you need to calibrate the battery. I trust what Lawrence Finch has to say about batteries in iOS devices. He is one of the most knowledgable and respected iPhone users in this community.

FWIW, I have not calibrated any of the batteries in my iOS devices and I have no battery problems at all.

I'd trust Lawrence over almost anyone on batteries.

OP: One thing that Lawrence recommends is that you charge your phone every night. Make sure that you have iCloud back up enabled and that the phone is connected to WiFi and the screen is locked. This will in insure that your phone is fully charged and ready to go in the morning and that it was backed up to iCloud the night before. This means, should something happen to your phone, you shouldn't lose more than that day's information.

    Best of luck.

I would strongly advise you check the warranty coverage, since the iPhone 5S was discontinued last fall.

That's correct. I don't calibrate my battery gauge anymore either. The only time you should consider it is if the phone shuts off with what should be plenty of battery energy left. This condition could indicate a calibration issue (which can happen if iOS has crashed recently) or a bad battery. Check for the bad battery with the Battery Life app, and, if it says the battery is OK, follow the discharge/full charge cycle once.

You can charge the battery at any time.

You can charge for any amount of time.

Do not deplete the battery to low levels.

Other than those tips, there is no need to micro-manage battery use/care.

So can we give a final conclusion to this discussion.

Phone should be used right out of the box and when the battery level is close to low levels it should be charged. There is no need to calibrate battery not even once and if that ever happens it is advisible to put the phone on charge immediately (within hours).

It doesn't turn off with plenty of battery energy left unless the battery is failing. It turns off when the battery gets critically low. However, if the gauge is miscalibrated it will appear to turn off with charge left in the battery when the battery is close to flat. That is why you should test the battery if this happens, and if it tests OK you should recalibrate the gauge. But this is the only time you should recalibrate the gauge.

That's sensible, but you can also set it up while plugged in.
