Q: AIRPORT EXTREME WI-FI

I understand the setting up of the this BASE station but I got a replacement for my airport express and got the Extreme but when choosing the "add to an existing network" is not detecting any wi-fi access points around. (i need to extend the wi fi area)

-Firmware is up to date, I though that will that case but is not, I went back to my "Express" and follow the set up process and did work just perfect detecting any wi fi access networks available but the "Extreme" is not, what I could have done wrong?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

Please read my post again. I said that the Express would not provide additional wireless coverage of your Verizon wireless network. It will provide AirPlay service and USB printer service.

There are couple of very simple ways to confirm that the Express is NOT extending the wireless signal from your Verizon modem/router......if you are interested and want proof.

As I said, the Express does not provide additional wireless coverage when it joins a third party network.....meaning that your wireless devices are connected to the Verizon wireless, not the Express wireless.....even though they might be located in close proximity to the Express.

Let's finish our conversation this way, how can you prove that the "express" does not extend?

I am the one who owns an "express" and by the way I am  a Network System Administrator By Cisco and I know what I have. and as right now I am connected to my 'express" as extender and is extending very well,

    Thank you.

The Express cannot wirelessly "extend" the wireless signal from the Verizon router.  If it could do this, the Express would connect using only wireless to the Verizon network and "repeat" the wireless signal providing more wireless signal coverage in the area near the Express.

As it stands now, I think that you are not understanding the difference between "join a wireless network" and "extend a wireless network".  The Express can "join" most third party networks to provide AirPlay service and USB printer connection. But....the Express does not "extend" the wireless network when it joins.

Let's first begin with what Apple says that the Express will do as far as extending a network wirelessly.

From Apple's info on the AirPort Express:    http://www.apple.com/airport-express/

Extend an existing Wi‑Fi network’s range.

If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express — and near the area where you want your wireless connection.

Please notice that Apple says that the the Express can extend the network provided by another Apple router.  What that means is that if you want the Express to wirelessly extend the network, another Apple router must provide the signal to be extended.

Next, please use AirPort Utility on your Mac to check the setup of the AirPort Express.  If you have a Mac that is using a current or recent operating system, open up AirPort Utility, click on the picture of the Express, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears.  Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window and check the setting for Network Mode.

Is it "Join a wireless network" or "Extend a wireless network"?  If it is "Join", the Express is not repeating the wireless signal. The Express must be setup to "Extend a wireless network" if you want it to extend or repeat the wireless signal from the Verizon modem/router.  But, if you try this, you will find that you cannot set up the Express this way, and error messages will appear.

So, what setting do you see for the Express?  If it is "Join", do you need more proof that the Express does not "repeat" or "extend" the network when it is set up to "Join a wireless network"?
