Holding both the power button and Home button won't turn the iPhone on. Only the power button top of the iPhone.
Charge the battery for at least an hour then try turning it on.
Be aware, an iPhone 4 can only be updated as far as iOS 7.1.x
Most apps these days require iOS 8 or later.
Since the iPhone has not been used for two years, it may need restoring.

But it has a passcode and i forgot what it is. tried a few times and it is now disable. so i was trying to try the recovery mode to erase the passcode and restore everything before erasing. somehow, holding the two buttons as suggested still didn't show the recovery mode but instead kept taking screenshots.
