Q: how to install el capitan to a partition

i want to run 10.6.8 AND El Capitan on my iMac.  I partitioned the hard drive and asked El Capitan to install, but there is no indication it is downloading.

iMac (27-inch Late 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Did you download the installer from the App Store? It should be in the Applications folder. If there, what happens if you double click on it?

Hi, Eric.  The download bar now indicates some motion, but it might take quite a while.  What file name should I look for in the application folder?  Thank you for responding.

If anyone reads this who works for Apple - could you ask the people in charge of the download page if they can make the progress bar notation more difficult to read?  4 point type is way too big.  And white/grey on that background is way too legible.

Seriously, If I could have read it without a magnifying glass, I might not have asked my initial question.  The progress bar is ok as it is, but could the download progress script be located outside the landscape photo?  Under the photo?  Black type (at least 8 points if not 10 or 12) on white background?  I might have been able to read it without glasses + magnifying glass when I was 20, but now that I am 70, it's very very difficult to read.  Still, with the jumping type, refreshing every few moments, it really needs to be a simply black type on white background.  Otherwise, it might be interpreted as Apple wanting to make things difficult for users.  And I know that's not true... Isn't it?

Once the file has been downloaded, does it give me a choice of where to install it?  Does it show me both partitions and say, "Choose location to install El Capitan"?  Thanks.

Thanks to you all and love to you all!

    Auntie Patricia

You can send a message to Apple here:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Yes, the installer gives you a choice. Click show all disks button.

Auntie Patricia, making the progress bar larger probably wouldn't help. Those progress bars are big liars, always have been.

Yes, you will have a choice where to install, if you have more than one blank Volume formatted for OS X.

Thanks.  I did send my suggestions to the link you provided.  But the download bombed.  I am very disappointed, after babying it for nearly 24 hours.    It said, "The application could not be downloaded.  The application you tried to download could not be downloaded.  Check your internet connection and try again."  At the point it bombed, it had only captured about 2.4 gigs of 6.1 gigs.  I lived far out of town, in the country, so my internet speed is not the greatest, but I managed to download El Capitan to my MacBookPro months ago without trouble.  Any suggestions?

Hmm... Thank you.  There is an icon in the dock that has a big "X" on it and it's also in the utilities folder in the applications folder, so does that mean anything?  I wonder when the icon shows up.  And I wonder what would happen if I clicked on it to open it.  ????

Now that it has told me that the download didn't work, I asked it to "retry" but I don't see any evidence of it retrying.  And it seems I'm unable to get back to the download page for El Capitan.  Is that because it thinks I already downloaded it?

OK.  Now I see that the "X" symbol is for X11, which is for Unix or something... Perhaps that came to the dock when my roommate (who is a computer tech at the local university) used the terminal?  I know he was using a "white letters on black background" screen.  So please excuse that comment.  It's obviously not El Capitan, even tho El Capitan is OSX 11.  LOL
