Jul 26, 2016 2:23 AM in response to Cymrucoolby Winston Churchill,Are you sure that the content you are trying to play isn't being blocked from using Airplay. Some providers do this and when they do all you get on the TV is audio.
Otherwise...
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
- Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
- Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
- Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
- Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
- Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
- Restart your mobile device.

Jul 26, 2016 3:47 AM in response to Cymrucoolby Diana.McCall,Hello Cymrucool,
When you open the AirPlay menu on your devices, what icon appears next to Apple TV? If it's not a TV, horizontal rectangle with a line under it, ATV is saying it can only accept audio. Try disconnecting and reconnecting both ends of the HDMI cable.

Jul 26, 2016 7:00 AM in response to Winston Churchillby Cymrucool,It's happening with anything I try and send - Netflix, Amazon Prime etc so I'll try your suggestions and let you know
-
Jul 26, 2016 7:07 AM in response to Diana.McCallby Cymrucool, the AirPlay icon is showing the rectangle but when I select it, it gives me the option of iPad with a kind of speaker symbol or Apple TV with a symbol that looks like an iPod!!! Before I updated the IOS it did look different which makes me feel like something has changed since I updated.
I removed the hdmi cable as suggested but no change.

Jul 26, 2016 7:35 AM in response to Winston Churchillby Cymrucool,HI
i'm getting the helen's ensuite symbol on all my devices. I tried as you suggested restarting devices, router, ATV etc but it's still the same - it's just working as a speaker - hmmmm an enigma wrapped in a mystery!
-
Jul 26, 2016 7:52 AM in response to Cymrucoolby Diana.McCall,OK, so ATV says it can only be an AirPlay speaker. That's what the iPod symbol is meant to be. That may mean there's a problem with HDCP copy protection in the connection to the TV. Is ATV directly connected to the TV, or is there another box in between? Could you try a different HDMI cable? A cable may work for video but be unable to establish the HDCP link. I assume you're using the same TV as when AirPlay was working, but could you try a different HDMI input?

Jul 26, 2016 7:58 AM in response to Cymrucoolby Winston Churchill,Where exactly are you seeing this icon, in the same screen as the screenshot above or in the window where you play the video.

Jul 26, 2016 9:43 AM in response to Diana.McCallby Cymrucool,The AppleTV goes straight to the TV - it's the same TV as when in worked. Have tried a different HDMI cable and input - still the same - I swipe up to bring up the AirPlay - I select AirPlay. I them have 2 options . iPad with the speaker type icon ( see image above in winson Churchill's post above next to iPhone) and Apple TV (2) with the same icon as Helen's ensuite in the post above. If I select Apple TV all I get is sound - no picture being sent to tv.

Jul 26, 2016 10:00 AM in response to Cymrucoolby Winston Churchill,I'm not sure whether Diana just hasn't tested her answer or whether we experience different results, but when I remove the HDMI cable from my set up the icon doesn't change from the TV icon regardless of whether I'm trying to play HDCP content or not. Whilst a problem with the HDMI cable may well explain why you don't see a picture on your TV, my tests suggests it wouldn't be the reason for the “Speaker Output Port” icon. Perhaps Diana can comment on this.
It's probably worth noting that I've only tested on the Apple TV 4 at this stage, since I assumed that's what you are using since it's the only one that's had a recent update.

Jul 26, 2016 10:14 AM in response to Winston Churchillby Cymrucool, its an ATV2 - the update i mention relates to my iPhone and iPad. I just wondered initially if it started going wrong after I updated but having checked using my daughter's iPhone which is an older phone working on an older version of IOS the same thing is happening there too. The ATV is just transmitting sound from every device.

Jul 26, 2016 10:23 AM in response to Cymrucoolby Winston Churchill,It's a little difficult to test my Apple TV2's, one is in my ons room who isn't here and the other is built into the bathroom wall and I can't easily get to the cables to remove them, but could if necessary. I will test with the Apple TV 3 since it was quite similar to the Apple TV 2.

Apple TVI get the same results with the Apple TV 3 as I did with the Apple TV 4. The icon doesn't change from the TV icon when I remove the HDMI cable and the video I'm playing on my phone continues to tell it's playing on the appropriate Apple TV, although obviously I can't see it. The video I was playing was an HD video from iTunes and therefore was guaranteed to use HDCP.

Jul 26, 2016 11:16 AM in response to Winston Churchillby Diana.McCall,You're right. I had not tested disconnecting the HDMI cable, and as you say, video AirPlay continues to work normally. But there's no HDCP issue in that case, since there's no connection. I believe that if a connection exists, but the HDCP negotiation fails, the ATV will indicate that it cannot accept video.
