Without more information, it's not possible to say. What are you doing when it freezes? How much free storage space do you have? What troubleshooting steps have you taken?

It happens when I try to input a number for SMS. And at times the apps freezes when opening or running. Got 40GB of 65GB free. I had to delete antutu benchmark app as well as FIFA soccer app and any other "irrelevant" app. I hate a sluggish phone, the major reason I got this iPhone 3 weeks ago.

What troubleshooting steps have you taken? Restart? Forced restart (press and hold the Home and power buttons until the apple appears, then let go and allow to continue starting) Force quit Messages? Restore from back up? Restore as new?

Thanks for the troubleshooting tips. It exits when I depress the home key. I had only tried the normal restart. Yesterday I updated to iOS 9.3.3, the apps aren't freezing. But the SMS does, dunno if it's because I'm yet to activate my iMessage although I receive SMSs.

No, the Messages app works just fine without activating iMessage.

Did you restore this iPhone from a back up of an older phone? If so, you may have a lot of messages. Try deleting most/all of your messages and seeing if that helps.
