It is taking forever to extract the software for a restore . What could be the hold up ?

    How long is forever? Are you updating as the kb article that linked you here suggests, or are you actually restoring the device using iTunes. If you are using iTunes, it can help if you temporarily disable antivirus software and your firewall.
