Q: Mac Pro (Late 2013) Crashing

Hi All. I hope someone can help.

I have a Mac Pro late 2013 and since I have had it, it has crashed sporadically and constantly. It can happen when just surfing the net or when using a DAW or other software.

I updated the software, and did a clean reinstall, and it still happens. I have updated OSX only the other day again, and still it does it.

The interaction regarding my use of the machine once the speedball kicks is described: I can't force quite. If I can move the cursor (as in, outside the window that is crashing), then as soon as I click the Apple logo, it speedballs completely. I have no other option but to force shutdown.

I have noticed also today that now the Kernel and Usage Reports, are not updating to the correct date? And I can only see some from a few days ago.

I have a mixture of:

Hung DMA0

Hung DMA1

Hung GFX

and some WindowServer reports, along with a few usage reports.

I called Apple, and they have told me to take it in for observation. As is it is sporadic, I am unsure how this will be resolved. They told me the Kernel reports won't show much without also observing the hardware?

I am a bit lost as I thought this was the Flagship machine, and I have never had so many problems than with this machine as opposed to other Mac's such as, iMac, Macbook Pro etc..

Any suggestions?

Thanks all.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    Hello again Jazzhead1,

I meant when (date-wise) did this problem start happening? Was it as soon as you bought the machine? A few months later?

Your EtreCheck report above has a link for Warranty & Service information. You can use that, along with your machine's serial number, to fight out how when your warranty expires. If there is a chance of hardware failure and your warranty is running out, don't delay. Go to the store as soon as possible. Even if your warranty has expired, Apple doesn't charge for diagnostics.

All I am asking you to do is uninstall the 3rd party software before any diagnostics, either by you or Apple. Make sure to use the vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never try to delete these files by hand. Never use an "app zapper".

If Apple finds a problem, then the problem must be hardware and it should be fixed. If Apple doesn't find a problem, then try to run the machine without the 3rd party software and see if it continues to have problems. You may need to go back to the store yet again. Sometimes hardware problems are intermittent and you will have to be persistent.

Don't worry (too much) about the refurbished parts. They are guaranteed to pass the same tests that new parts do. My point is that none of those tests are 100% perfect. Don't crack open your machine unless you have no other option and you've completely eliminated any potential software conflict. And there is a flip side too, because not everyone follows that advice. You may get a refurb part from someone who did get a hardware repair due to a software problem. In that case, the refurb may be higher quality that the one you already have.

Surgery always has some element of risk. If you can wait and try less invasive therapies, then I don't see anything wrong with that. Just don't let the warranty expire.

    Hi Etresoft.

Well again today, I just had the machine on, doing simple task, playing music etc, and two speedballs.

    Hung Channels: GFX

So I guess it's time to hand it over now and let them deal with it.

    Fingers crossed.
