Q: Moving iPhoto AND Photos App

I recently moved my entire iPhoto library to an external hard drive and deleted iPhoto from my internal HD. It hardly freed up any of my HD.  I had over half of it filled with photos.  When I plug in a memory card to my Mac the Photo App opens and I can put them there.  Does this mean they are 2 separate libraries?  I thought they were using the same library.  So I am thinking that I need to also move the Photo app also?  Will that free up the space? I hope this makes sense.  I stink at trying to explain in writing.  Do I just drag the whole Photo library as I did the iPhoto and then delete from internal hard drive?  And yes, they are backed up and the EXH is formatted. Thanks!!

They’re separate libraries. You need to move the Photos library, and move or delete the iPhoto library as desired.

Depending on the method used, the media files may or may not remain hardlinked if both libraries are simultaneously moved to an external drive.

What method could they remain linked?  I really don't want to delete iPhoto.

The librari3s won't remain linked if you move them to another volume.  So decide if you need the iPhoto Library and, if not, delete it and continue using the Photos library.

Ok, got it.  I am sure there is a wealth of info out there on how to transfer but seeing I already transferred iPhoto how do I merge them and get them ALL in Photo?  I have quite a few more in iPhoto than in Photo.

You can merge Photos Libraries with Power Photos, if you have it. So you could open one iPhoto Library after the other in Photos and then use Power Photos to merge the libraries.   See this User Tip:   Notes on Merging Photos Libraries

Unless you've added additional photos to the iPhoto Library since migrating to Photos there should be no reason to merge them again.

You can migrate your current working iPhoto library to Photos leaving you with two Photos libraries.  Then you can use the paid version of PowerPhotos to merge the two libraries into one.

Well I don't have that program.  This iPhoto-Photos has become such a nightmare I can't tell you.  With 30,000 some photos I truthfully don't know where to start.  I thought moving iPhoto was going to solve some of my disc space issues.  Other then another purchase any other ideas?

How much storage you will gain back will depend on how much you edited your current Photos Library. If you deleted a lot of photos from the Photos version of the library, deleting the iPhoto library may gain a lot of storage.  Just try it and move the iPhoto Library to an external drive.

I Already did that and didn't gain a fraction of the space the photos are taking.

Have you also emptied the Recently Deleted in Photos? Storage will only be freed, if the photos are gone both from iPhoto and Photos.
