Q: My Mac freezes on shut down.

Seems to be Finder related because it will not relaunch.  Suggestions?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Make sure OS X is up to date.

Open System Preferences > App Store then click: Check Now

    Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Outdated software for a Wacom tablet can prevent shutdown. If you no longer use the device, please remove the software. Otherwise, update it to the latest version from the manufacturer's website.

After following the removal instructions linked above, you may also need to open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences, select the Login Items tab, and delete any Wacom-related items. That's because the uninstaller is defective.

Back up all data before making any changes.

Mine does too.  This all started with the El Capitan update to 10.11.6.  I don't have any Wacom tablet software and the plist fix didn't solve it, either.

So I went to .plist and saw some browser related stuff in there I did not like.  Cleared browser history and now it shuts down like a boss.  But I did update Wacom and I was in the process of updating OS X, which it would not do because it kept telling me there was a unexpected shutdown, which was corrected as well by dumping browser history.

What fixed it for me is to delete everything in the Library>Preferences folder.  I'm sure the problem happened as a result of the El Capitan update, though.  I made absolutely no changes to my computer, and this problem came up immediately after the update.
