Q: Carplay connection problems with Chevrolet & iPhone 6s

I've recently acquired 2016 Chevy Corvette that features Carplay connectivity.  Unfortunately every time I try co connect, the infosystem on the car becomes unresponsive and crashes,  and basically has to reset itself.  The Chevy service told me to use genuine Apple phone connector.  I tried it, but that didn't seem to work.  I don't know if others had experienced similar problems.  It seems like a glitch in Chevy software, but I wonder if it could be related to my phone.  Carplay was a big selling point for me and it is very annoying that this happens.  The best I can do is listen to music via Bluetooth.

Anyone has any additional information about this?

I have similar issues with my Camaro 2016. Everything seems to work perfectly well apart from the music, works ok for a while and then becomes a little flakey and unresponsive when changing songs.

I find things work better if you connect the phone via USB before you turn the car on.

i Am hoping the CarPlay updates in iOS 10 will improve connectivity issues..

    fingers crossed...

You may not see what you are hoping for. It is the responsibility of the vehicle manufacturer/audio manufacturer to implement CarPlay. Apple provides the platform, and then the manufacturer makes it work in their vehicle. I would make sure that you report these problems to Chevrolet for them to debug and work on fixes.

I've got CarPlay in a 2017 Hyundai that has been working flawlessly since we got it. It has been a great idea, and really like how it enhances what the phone can do in the vehicle.

    Thanks Chris,

whilst i agree partially with your opinion I believe it would actually be on both sides.

just because you are having no issues doesn't necessarily prove it's just an issue with our cars. Compatibility works both ways.

Anyway, I contacted the Chevy Infotainment team and they are aware of this issue and numerous others In relation to 2016 models. They are currently working with Apple to get these things resolved, at this time the potential solution is an update to iOS and not the car software. We'll see, we may need to update the car software as well. Whatever the fix is I'm just happy it's completely acknowledged and is being taken seriously.

Same problem with CarPlay in my 2016 Malibu Premier (upgraded Infotainment system). Get this: My phone works fine in a 2016 Malibu LS (loaner from the dealer) without the upgraded Infotainment system.

Is anyone also having the problem with Siri via Bluetooth: When I press the steering wheel talk button and activate Siri ("Call home, or Remind me to....") Siri replies: "You need to unlock your iPhone first." This behavior does NOT occur with my same iPhone 6S in two other vehicles I've tested: Chevy Equinox, Toyota Camry.

Spoken to Chevy/GM Infotainment team, and they've been elevating the issues, but currently playing phone tag.

It's definetely a strange one - some have no problems & some have them, doesn't seem consistent for certain.

Probably a stupid question, so apologies in advance, but do you have the Siri setting enabled 'Access on Lock Screen' on your phone?

I recently took the plunge and enrolled in the iOS 10 public beta program - since upgrading to this iOS 10 beta I have already noticed an improvement in all functionality including Siri.

I have a feeling when iOS10 is officially released we'll find most of our issues are fixed, but also have a feeling there'll be another iOS update soon after 9and probably ongoing) and probably a recall for a firmware update for the infotainment system... My contact at the Chevy infotainment team is very helpful and told me about all the bugs/issues that are known (it's a long list!) I have faith in what he said to me that GM/Chevy are working with apple right now to sort it all out - he's keeping me fully updated with progress, so I'll make sure to post on here when I here news.

Guess we all just need to be patient at the moment..... (Don't get me wrong, I'm still annoyed!)

Yes, I have Siri setting enable "Access on Lock Screen".

Thanks for your comments and looking forward to any further posts/update you may have.

You can try resetting the settings on your phone and see if it helps, but I'm  guessing it's a problem with the head unit in your car.

Any chance you could connect me to your contact on the Infotainment team? I'd love to get in the loop on an update.

    Hey Edwin,

For some reason the forum will not let respond to your message. Hate to hear that about your contact. I guess I'll keep checking back here for updates. Thanks.

    Hi Toby,

Unfortunately my posts have been taken down... Yes it's a real shame my contact at the infotainment team has left, i had a less than useful conversation with another agent, which was simply left that 'they are still working through with apple'. I hope that the iOS10 release will improve the matter with both the sluggish music skipping and also the Siri issue.

I have a question for you guys, something i started noticing on the display, see the screen shot on this thread: http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=434677

basically the icons that get displayed while changing air con settings disappear sometimes - I've noticed that it seems to happen when i've used the remote start feature, the air con system works fine, it's just that the display seems to get corrupt... Realise this is a thread about CarPlay, but as some of you are Camaro 2016 owners, i thought i'd ask to see if you have experienced anything similar.

    Thanks

For me, Carplay has been very frustrating.  I have owned a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado since April and I have put countless hours in trying to figure out ways  and "workarounds" to stop the glitches, screen freezes, problems connecting etc.  Now I mainly stick with bluetooth for consistency and reliability.  Regardless of whose problem this is (Chevy's or Apple's), I believe Apple is more tarnished on this issue and I sure hope they are working with Chevy to fix this.  Carplay was a big seller for me.  I have been an avid and proficient apple user since 2002 (iMacs, macbook pros, iPods, iPhones), and I had high expectations for Carplay, only to be met with major disappointment. In fact, I will argue that it's intended purpose of preventing distracted driving is doing just the opposite, since I spend so much time on the road fiddling with it, simply trying to get it to behave.

I believe most of the issues people are reporting are being caused by the software in the OEM head units and conflicts with attempting to integrate carplay and on-screen vehicle controls (as in the example above where  the A/C control partially covers the carplay display.

I recently installed an aftermarket unit in my car (Kenwood Excelon DDX6902S) that's been flawless as far as CarPlay goes. My wife'd 2016 Sonata with CarPlay built in has worked perfectly as well. Neither of us have to deal with touch-screen controls for any of the car functions or features.

I have to second what Tim has stated. Apple provides the ability, and it is up to the OEM to provide the interface with their devices. They have to work out the implementation before they release it.

We have a 2017 Elantra with CarPlay that has worked very well. I truly enjoy the way that it operates and it inegrates well with all of the Hyundai's operations.
