Q: Problem with Windows 10 on a MacBook Pro

Hi !

I've got a MacBook Pro (15 inch, Mid 2012, 2.6GHz Intel Core i7, 8Gb memory 1600MHz DDR3), running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6.

And until yesterday, I had Windows 7 on that same MacBook that I used from to time through Boot Camp. But yesterday, I got notification that my Windows 10 free upgrade was ready to install. So I clicked on the "Upgrade now" button and upgrade started and apparently everything went fine. BUT after upgrading, when I want to open the Boot Camp control panel within Windows 10, I get an error message "an error occured while trying to access the startup disk settings.

You may not have the privileges to change startup disk. Make sure you have administrative privileges and try again".

And moreover, I cannot use the trackpad within Windows environment anymore (I indeed got to plug a mouse in order to "control" the computer)...

Can you tell me how to fix this ?

Not sure about the startup disk settings error but for your other trackpad issue I would suggest installing the Bootcamp windows 10 drivers if you haven't already done so.  I believe some drivers will need to be updated now that you are in windows 10.

Follow apple instructions here on how to get the Win10 bootcamp drivers.

Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support

    Hi maibro,

thank you for your reply but in order to update the drivers, before posting my question, I had already tried to reinstall latest Boot Camp support software in Windows using Boot Camp Assistant and downloading the software on a USB key (just like mentioned in the Apple instructions)... And when I clicked on the setup.exe in the Boot Camp folder on the USB key, Windows says that this setup.exe program cannot be used with this version of Windows and that I should contact the maker of my computer...

So I am stuck...  Does anybody have an idea to solve those two problems (i.e. startup disk settings and updating of the drivers) ?

    Thank you very much.

    1. Please post the Product Version line from Bootcamp.xml on your W10 BC6 drivers USB.

    2. The in-place upgrade from W7 to W10 does not provide W10 apple drivers. You can either run Apple Software Update or the USB method. The error message indicates a failed/incomplete W10 upgrade. W7 uses BC5.x drivers, but W10 uses BC6.x drivers.

    Hi Loner T,

    thank you for your post.

    1. the Product Version line from Bootcamp.xml on the USB key is <ProductVersion>6.0.6136</ProductVersion>  ... and the Bootcamp version in the Windows disk partition is version 4, so it's probably the reason why I got the message saying that setup.exe program on the USB key cannot be used with this PC ... But how to resolve this ?

    2. To get the W10 Apple drivers I had already run the Apple Software Update program before posting my "problem" here but it says that my computer is up-to-date and don't suggest any update. And as far as the USB method is concerned, well... when I try to run the setup.exe I got the above mentioned error message, therefore I don't see how to get out of that "vicious circle" ...

Would you have any other idea or is a complete erasure followed by a re-install the only solution left ?!?

    Thanks.

W10 uses BC 6.x drivers. You have the correct drivers. What happens if you run setup.exe from the USB when booted in W10?

Yes, I have BC 6.x on the USB key indeed, but I saw that the Boot Camp Manager (i.e. the bootcamp.exe file) within the Windows disk partition is a version 4.x ....

And that's when I run setup.exe from the USB after having booted in W10 that I got the error message saying that  "this app can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher".

    Thanks.

You may be able to remove the BC 4.x version after creating Windows System Restore point and re-installing BC 6.0.6136.

The restore point will allow Safe Boot, if you have problems.

mmm... not sure how to re-install BC 6.0.6136 if Windows continues to say that "this app can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, blah blah blah" when I'll try to run the setup.exe from the USB after having deleted the BC 4.x version... Not familiar with the Windows procedures of Restore point and so on.

I have the impression that I'll have to erase the Windows partition and re-start the Windows install from scratch...

    Thanks.

Your W7 drivers are still in place. Due to these, your W10 installation has a conflict with the installed drivers. If you can clean install W10, it will much easier, but depends on your installed applications on Windows.

SysPrep can also be used to make a W10 installation a generic driver-less installation, but can be used only a limited number of times.

Something just came into my mind ... I checked the system information in W10 and it says that it's a 32 bits system... But probably the setup.exe file on the USB key is designed for a 64 bits system ? Could this be the reason of my problems ?

And if yes, is there a way to solve that ?

    Thanks.

That is a problem. If you re-install, you will get W10 64-bit. Was you original W7 a 32-bit install prior to the upgrade?

Yes indeed, my original W7 was a 32-bit version...  Strange that the Windows 10 free upgrade proposal didn't make any comment or suggestion about the 32-bit or 64-bit versions before upgrading...
