Q: After OS X 10.11.6 update the Spotlight search, or any search in Finder or Mail don't work

My fantastic Spotlight search are not working anymore :-( I noticed this after the update 10.11.6

The spotlight find some funny things, but noting even App Store within the Application on my Mac Book Pro. It will not find anything within the Contact or Calendar or other places.

My Mail search will not find anything at all same goes to Finder search.

So I am a little stuck and seek help from the professionals ;-)

This is a diagnostic procedure. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.

I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. That's what I suggest you use, even if your preferred browser is something else.

The instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

    Step 1

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    { /usr/bin/mdutil -as 2>&-; echo; /usr/bin/mdimport -L 2>&1; echo; /usr/bin/syslog -F \$Message -k Sender mdworker -o -k Message Rne Norm -k Sender mds -o -k Sender sandboxd -k Message Seq mdutil | /usr/bin/tail -100 | /usr/bin/sort | /usr/bin/uniq | /usr/bin/tail -50; } | /usr/bin/pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

    Step 2

Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select

              View â–¹ Show Log List

from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds," "mdworker," or "mdwrite," and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents—the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs—they're very long and not helpful.

When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

You may try to rebuild the Spotlight index.

Go to System Preferences->Spotlight, click on Privacy, add your drive to the list, and then remove it from there.

Your system may slow a bit while Spotlight reindexes, but it is very likely you'll be back in search business.

Testet by restarting the mac without any external drive.

Result: Looks like everything works again :-)

Reconnecting the Thunderbolt 2 cable, with my external stuff on ... very soon back to, no result in my search ... even within Mail (?) funny that one ...

Is there any solution for this?

I really like to have my Thunderbolt 2 cable connected with my external stuff on.

The Macbook Pro don't have as many connection point so I have a Elgato Thunderbolt dock on the other end, with this my LAN, headset, Kingston dual screen docking, Wacon Intuos, mice, docking to iPhone and also so I can use my LaCie 3TB external disk.

Can I do something so the Spotlight search and all other Search function will be back in action again?

Your problem seems to be with indexing the external La Cie drive - therefore it seems to be that reindexing it may help. Do the steps I indicated in my previous post, but with the external drive this time.

My LaCie has a shared partition for Windows on it and this looks like part of the challange.

When I add the LaCie (main) under Privacy I still had the same issues with search. Then I tried to add the "LaCie Shared" I got an unknown error message and can't do so. When I unmounted this then the search function looks like it's back in action. But then I have no connection to this partition, thats on the LaCie external drive.

Any fix here or is it unto LaCie team to come up with a solution since this is 3rd part equipment from Apple?

At this moment I have not enabled the LaCie, removed from the Privacy list.

    Last news within this case,

It looks like the Windows partition on the LaCie that is the challenge, "LaCie shared" as my local (default) name. When I unmount this partition the search function: Spotlight, Finder, Mail etc works. Even with the main "LaCie" connected (not in the Privacy list).

With "LaCie Shared" unmounted the the Spotlight Search also find items on the LaCie partition ...

So, now is my request for support turned to this item, is there any fix her that I can do?

Or is this challenge something for the 3rd part supplier, LaCie and there team to sort out?
