Q: Late '11 Macbook Pro iMessage won't sign in

As of 2 days ago, iMessage on my Late 2011 Macbook Pro running 10.11.6 won't sign in. I keep getting "An error occurred during activation. Tray again." message. I have signed out of both my iPad and iPhone and messed with making sure the time zone is correct. I have messed around with deleting a couple of supposedly related .plist files that I found in suggestions here on the boards.

My iMessage still remains to work just fine on my iPhone and iPad. I was using iMessage fine on my mac until I noticed my responses to messages were only going out as SMS and not as iMessage. But the responses back from the other person came in as iMessage. I tried signing out thinking that might help and now I can't sign back in. I am getting very frustrated with this. This is also affecting FaceTime on my Mac, I get the same error message but FaceTime still works fine on my iPhone and iPad.

That's a pain.  I would suggest starting out with the chat support.  You can do it while Netflixing...

    Hi,

Use Linc's List from this Thread I can no longer sync my Mac with iPhone for Messages.

If you find it has the Serial Number, does not work in another Mac User Account  and that the Safe Boot, NVRAM resert and SMC reset have not worked then consider my post at the bottom about calling Apple Support.

The Mac uses the Serial Number to provide and Devices Specific Login.

As far as we can tell occasionally for some with no details as to why this security feature can get triggered and the only reset is via Apple Support.

The iMessages Server Block on your Apple ID used in iMessages on the Mac will only effect iMessages.

Related issues can be the inability to read the Keychain for the IDS Apple ID-Auth Token  (where Apple ID is the email used)

    Inability to read certain .plists.

This thread may help there Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs Error

Linc's Orange marked "test" Terminal Instruction and the Solved "Correction" will find and correct the permissions if incorrect.

If you are using PHP in Dreamweaver or similar you may have to reset the use of that function of the Web server in the OS.
