Apple TVYou would need to turn AirPlay on from the MBP which involves being able to see what you are doing. I suspect there will be some convoluted method of you achieving your goal, but I rather you are best using the cable or better still getting your MBP fixed.

But when the airplay is connected and I unplug the hdmi cable from the MBP, the desktop will wirelessly display on the samsung and I can use the MBP cursor, but it will then default to the apple tv apps menu and I can't recover the desktop. Cost of replacement MBP Retina display is almost as great as buying a "new" 2013 MBP. I would have already bought the newest MBP but apple seems to be in no hurry to release it.

I'd be inclined to continue with the cable until they do, however if you want to pursue the Apple TV idea you might want to think about about some sort of desktop sharing app to run from a phone or something. I don't think you could do it with the cable since you are already using the display options to mirror to the TV.

I'm not sure you won't have the same issues with using air parrot as you would AirPlay and of course it's much less reliable too.

setup the server on the MacBook using your tv disconnect
connect from the client on the phone and attempt to airplay mirror the mac to the tv
mind you it will likely work horrific and stop working when the mac falls asleep in which case you would have to redo it from the phone

Jul 29, 2016 5:35 PMby litterbuggy,The best solution really is a cable, but just as an aside, the current version of AirParrot is much more stable and transmits higher quality video and sound than it did just a few years ago. It does cost $13, and Airplay will be better, but in a pinch AirParrot can be a viable interim fix.

Airparrot is a poor product, it has no value for hardware that can run AirPlay and little value on hardware that can't since it causes other system conflicts and problems.
