    Sorry...

    - yes icloud mail account

    - its the only one running under mail

    - i have hotmail and other mail accounts running under outlook client

    - these work fine....

What is really confusing me is that the account on my iphone is fine, but the ipad doesnt work (it worked this morning)...and neither does my macbook...

I've compared all the settings on iphone and ipad and they are the same....

    Hi

    it says

Icloud - Icloud IMAP - connection and login to server successful

    in the logs it has

    WROTE Jul 29 14:25:47.537 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelTLSv1_0] -- host:p19-imap.mail.me.com -- port:993 -- socket:0x6080002b5300 -- thread:0x608001a65980

    48.5 IDLE

    READ Jul 29 14:25:47.712 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelTLSv1_0] -- host:p19-imap.mail.me.com -- port:993 -- socket:0x6080002b5300 -- thread:0x608001a65980

    + idling

and then when I try to send it throws this up

Connections to the server “p19-smtp.mail.me.com” on the default ports timed out.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.

I ran Connection Doctor on my Mac and it should both iCloud IMAP line item and an SMTP line item. IMAP is for receiving mail while SMTP is for sending.

    In Mail>Preferences>iCloud>Server Settings>Manage Outgoing Servers>what is listed?

on the drop down for outgoing mail server (SMTP) its got the 3 servers that are in the server list (for my other mail accounts)

    and it has

    icloud(not connected)

    which clearly is the problem..

    From:

Get help using iCloud Mail - Apple Support

If you can't receive mail in the Mail app on your Mac

Find the name of your iCloud account on the left side of the main Mail window. If your account name is dimmed and has a lightning-bolt symbol next to it, your account is offline. To take your account online, connect to the Internet, then choose Mailbox > Take All Accounts Online. If you still need help, use these steps:
    Choose Mail > Preferences.
    Click the Accounts tab.
Select your iCloud account from the list of accounts.
Click the Advanced tab and check your settings:
    Port: 993
    Select Use SSL
    Authentication: Password or Apple Token
