Q: Safari kernel panics

I have a 2008 MacPro that typically runs very stable - rarely have crashes/restarts

A couple of months ago, I began having kernel panics with Safari - I made no changes to my Mac at that time. I could launch Safari and use it it briefly (minute or so), then my Mac would lockup and restart. I tired deleting some Safari files (like cache/cookies/plist) and also tried re-installing the OS (10.11.5) with no luck - so I switched to Chrome.

For the past couple of months, I've been using Chrome with no further kernel panics - so I gave up on Safari.

With the latest OS update, I saw there was a new version of Safari installed, so I updated to OS 10.11.6, relaunched Safari, and the kernel panic returned. I continue to use Chrome without problems.

I've included the last Panic Report in the hope that someone here can point me in the right direction of solving this problem:

    You have memory related problems which may indicate bad RAM.

    However, I would first uninstall parallels and logmein and test. If no panics, then reinstall one-at-a-time.

    If you still get panics, run Rember from Kelly Computing to test the RAM. If you've added to the original RAM, you can try removing pairs of sticks to determine if one is causing the problem.

    Software is not one of the causes of kernel panics. The primary cause is hardware and kernel extensions.

    I do not think it is bad RAM, as that tends to have a single bit (maybe 2 changings), but this was a 64-bit value changing to 0.

    It seems to me that one of the 3rd party kernel extensions you have installed, kept using memory it had given back to the operating system.  That is the typical cause of freed memory getting modified.

    Also you truncated the panic report.  We can only see 2 3rd party kernel extensions, but it is possible you have more, unless you stopped as soon as you saw com.apple.* kernel extensions.

    Thank you both for taking the time to reply -

    I'm running Rember now, but thought memory was less likely since my Mac runs fine if I don't use Safari. I'll uninstall LogMeIn next (don't use it)

    I copied the kernel log from the Console as it is - I assume I have more 3rd kernel ext as well but that is all that is listed in the log

    UPDATE: the RAM tests all passed with Rember

    Uninstalling LogMeIn seems to have done the trick for now - been able to use Safari for about an hour without a kernel panic

    Thanks!

    Unfortunately, it seems I spoke too soon. At first, Safari seemed to be doing fine after the LogMeIn unistall, but I've had two kernel panics since then - the report for the last one:

    Anything else in this report you wish to keep us from using to help you diagnose the problem?

    Everything in the Loaded and Unloaded kexts that doesn't begin with com.apple are potential problems.

    Generally, the current version Parallels does not cause problems with the OS, but I don't know what that is.

    Except for the Logitech drivers (which tend to have had problems with each update), I don't know anything about them.

    To determine if they are a problem, you must uninstall them all and test.

    If you don't get kernel panics with all of them uninstalled, you can then start reinstalling one-at-a-time and test to determine if that one is the cause.

    Sometimes, you can link the current BSD process to one of the kexts which may help in determining the problem kext.

    When you have eliminated all third-party kernel extensions, then the most likely cause is a hardware fault. The most common hardware fault is RAM. Hardware can also be connected peripherals, more likely Hard Drives than printers.

    The "Full" panic report should be available at (this would be helpful)

    Kernel Panic reports: "/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports"

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546>

    <http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553>

    The panic report should have "panic" in the file name.

    I also think it is time to post an EtreCheck report

    <https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>

    <http://etrecheck.com>

    That way we will have a better idea of how your system is configured.  These partial panic reports are not as helpful as they could be.

    No hardware section? i.e. RAM, peripherals connected to each Bus?

    Sometimes there isn't. No idea why some have it and some don't.

    As already mentioned, the trouble-shooting steps are to remove all third-party kexts and then test; reinstall one and test; repeat as required.

    You have some 3rd part RAM, which is another potential panic generator.  Try removing pairs of matched DIMMs and testing, cycling through the different DIMMs.  The kernel will put things in different parts of RAM and apps demand for RAM will often affect placement, and the frequency that an app hits any specific bit of RAM can affect the RAMs behavior, which may be why another browser does not see this problem.  You can also run the Rember test over night (a single pass is not enough) <http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/>

    You also have a bunch of USB devices attached.  While I suspect the USB far less than the kernel extensions and 3rd party RAM, it cannot be ignored, as broken USB devices and/or broken USB cables have been responsible for kernel panics in the past.  Try disconnecting USB devices, including any USB hubs, and USB keyboard/mice.  If you have alternate keyboard/mice use them for awhile while testing USB.  (again, I do not actually suspect USB really, so do this last, but please try USB elimination if nothing else seems to cure your problems).

    I'm not saying any of the above is responsible, but you should test by eliminating different items and seeing if the problem goes away.

    Thanks for the input -

    Since my Mac is stable without kernel panics unless Safari is running, I figured hardware issues like RAM and USB were unlikely - the same hardware is present without Safari running and doesn't crash. Is there something particular about Safari that explains this?

    The Rember test I ran was overnight - I also ran a TechTool Pro memory test with the same results.

    EtreCheck has been running on Mac for a couple of days, claiming to be "checking software" after clearing the hardware pane - not sure what to make of that, but it seems like it's stuck...

    Once again, Software does not cause kernel panics. Safari may trigger the kernel panic because it asks for something that triggers it, but it isn't the cause in and of itself.
