Q: Server is creating a new website directory

I'm using El Capitan with Server 5.1.7

I am trying to host a public website only for the purposes of testing some new code that requires public access, but I don't want to experiment on my operational website that is hosted elsewhere.

Under Websites, I have the defaults: "Server Website" and "Server Website (SSL)" which I have not changed. I added another site assigned to my test domain. The files for this site are on another volume called "Work" to which I have this site pointing to. I got everything working, or so I thought. After a restart of the computer, the website no longer works. For some reason a new "Work" folder is shown in the Volumes along with the actual  "Work" volume. The Server generated Domain Error says that the server is looking for the Website files in "Work 1". I have to delete the "Work 1" folder and go to Websites and repoint it back to the correct "Work" volume each time.

(I wanted to store the files on another volume because I don't want to fill up the SSD where the Server's default directory resides.)

Anybody have an idea what I am doing wrong?

Sounds to me like your external storage is taking a long time to mount.  This means that when Apache launches, the path /Volumes/Work does not exist as the disk it not yet mounted.  A process is then creating a folder called Work in the /Volumes directory.  When your external volume does mount, it can not mount as the same name as the folder so it becomes Work 1 (while in the Finder it still shows as Work).  But now the virtual host configuration is looking in the wrong place.

What type of drive is your external volume?  Any chance of power management features?
