Q: Advises on processing cr2 raw files

Good day!

I am new to shooting raw files, and need some good tips & advise from you to process in Aperture.

My camera is canon 6D, my aperture version is 3.6.

I imports my pictures to Aperture library with selecting effect pre-set "auto-enhance", some how when i load the individual picture to view, it seems to "make" my pictures "darker" as compare when i view from my camera.

I import my other raw picture by this time de-select the "pre-set", same thing happen when i view the pictures from Aperture.

My questions:

1. Is this normal for raw file processing? Meaning i will have to do some exposure & contrast adjustment?

2. Or is there any tips i can learn from you in processing raw files with Aperture?

3. The pictures are perfect when i view from my camera, however, it seems somehow bit "out" when i load into Aperture.

Thanks in advanced for any tips & advise sharing.

Cheers!

OS X El Capitan (10.11), 2.5GHz intel core i5

Do you have a raw processing default set for your camera, in the adjustments panel? Select a raw image and check the default

Good Day Leonie, nice to meet you again here.

I am not sure i understand your question correctly, so far, i didn't process my raw images with the camera, what i did is just straight import from my card to the Aperture.

The information that i can see from one of the image when i press info. show: picture size, picture style, adbe RGB, RAW format etc.

    Will these information help?

    Cheers!

Hi Richard, sorry for keeping you waiting. I had to get back to my Mac with Aperture. I posted originally from my iPad.

    See this screenshot:

Aperture has a Raw Fine Tuning as an adjustment, that will always be applied. It is different for each camera.

Chech the settings for the RAW fine tuning used for your camera. Usually the values are reasonalbe. but you might tweak them a bit, if you find, that the do not work for your camera.

I had to move the "Boost" slider all the way to the right for one of my cameras.  In the Adjustments panel for one of your RAW images click "Add adjustment", then check the settings. I would not change the camera default, unless all photos need a modification.

A new camera default can be saved from the gears icon to the right of "RAW fine tuning".

    Dear Leonie,

Not sure you face this challenge, every time (average about 3 photos) when i did some adjustments on the "raw picture tuning", the system seems "hang" with "loading", i need to re-start the software in order for me to continue to work.

    Cheers!

Are we using the same OS X version? Os X 10.11.6?

when i did some adjustments on the "raw picture tuning", when i did some adjustments on the "raw picture tuning", the system seems "hang" with "loading", i need to re-start the software in order for me to continue to work.

    That is not normal.

I never had this problem, but I am using the Raw Fine Tuning sparingly, and then it is working as advertized. I'll test a bit more later today to see if I can reproduce the problem.  Have you checked this manual page? http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=17%26se ction=14%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:Apertu…

I am using the RAW Fine Tuning Controls this way:

    • For my Canon EOS 5D Mark II  I modified the boost sliders and saved the changes as a new  camera default.  They will be applied automatically to all new photos.
    • I do not apply individual changes of the RAW fine Tuning, unless there is a problem with moire, or artificial light is causing a problem with the color contrast.

I've also started seeing this "loading..." hang issue with Aperture 3.6/ MacOS 10.11.6.  It started when I began working on 20MP raw files from my new GX8.  I don't see this issue when working with jpegs or smaller 12MP raw files from my GH1. The problem has come up apparently randomly in three scenarios:

    1. When rapidly advancing from image to image with the browser in split view or viewer mode (not waiting for the loading... indicator to go away).

    2. When applying adjustments to the raw image.

    3. When zooming in and back out of an image.

Sometimes in these scenarios the Aperture Activity window will show that a preview for the selected image is being rebuilt, but it never completes.

    Dear Leonie,

My OS version 10.11 (beta) and my Aperture is 3.6. And i have read through the document, i believe is more on how to use the functions, is useful for using the Raw File Tuning functions. However, the "hang & loading" issues still happening to me.

BTW, just a quick questions, IF i do not want this "raw file tuning" to automatically apply to my pictures when imports to Aperture, will that possible?

    Cheers!

Soem RAW preset has to be used. Otherwse Aperture could not deveope the RAW at all. But you can keep the camera default on the Apple defeault prset.

Have you read Keith Barkley's user Tip?  The Big Three: Setting your camera for the best Aperture RAW results

Thanks Leonie for your speedy response and is a knowable article from Keith.

I think what i will do is to reset my 6D back to default setting, then try import to Aperture, this may help as i did number of setting on my camera..

    Once again, thanks Leonie..

    Cheers!!
