Q: file recovery

My HD crashed. A local Mac techie (not official Apple) said my HD was unusable and wanted to install a new HD. I erased it and failed to install a new OS. I then used a G5 to successfully install a new basic Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on my crashed HD. It ran my computer. An attempted upgrade to SL 10.6.8 failed and deleted 10.6.3. Im now using an external HD as my HD. My internal HD remains on desktop, despite ejection, after restart. My backup external HD failed to copy the last 10 months. I want to recover the last 10 months. Are there any practical free file recovery apps, presumably online?

Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the files to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition.

Data Rescue may (I know it did have) have a free download to see what can be recovered. You have to purchase the product to do the actual file recovery.
